My S1 starter motor doesn't always turn. I get a click, the immobiliser light is off & when I rock the car in gear it will release & start.

I plan therefore to replace the starter motor.
Has anyone done that ? Any advice on how to do it & who to get a new one from?
John

I wonder if the "Hi-Torque" type starter is available to fit these engines. Probably not necessary, just thinking out loud... smile

I had problems with my 4/4 1905cc sometimes it would start sometimes it refused this was anyday and any weather. A starting motor with attitude . Ben Duncan had sent me several one may start it when cold but not hot . Then another would do the other way . It was like banging my head against the brick wall . Lying in the snow is no fun . So I contacted this firm and asked if they could help they made me one and never had a problem its a few years ago one chap on TM had the same problem and I gave him the firms details he popped it on TM they sorted his problem also . May be worth a telephone call.

John, never known an S1 Roadster starter to fail, are you really high mileage with 1000's of starts ?

First I would clean up the main heavy cable connection into the solenoid & engine earth strap, they often look a bit crusty on Mogs I've worked on

Check the hole at six o'clock in the bellhousing John. You can see the ring gear, and if a cover plate isn't fitted it will allow water and road debris to enter the bellhousing.

The starter on my Roadster had a Jaguar sticker and number.....if you look at my early posts there's photo which shows the number.

Got it! http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/38329/2

Dave,
I covered the bolt hole a long time ago.
In Holland this week but will check the car Friday.
John

Also plan to check all the connections & replace the relay.
The car has done 35.5k miles.

Just a thought but starter solenoid which piggybacks the motor may be at fault. Symptons are loud click but no churning of engine.

Mechanics stick a large screwdriver across main solenoid terminals and see if motor spins up. It won't engage of course but indicates which is faulty. Not sure if latest starter motors have service replacement solenoids though.

Definitely check the solenoid and connections, especially the earth.Years ago I had a car (not Morgan) with the same symptoms of clicking but no engagement. The motor itself was ok but the solenoid failed to engage the gear. A local auto electrical specialist cleaned and sorted it. I occasionally had to tap the solenoid (with a piece of wood )on the top of the motor to unstick it.

Could be damage to the ring gear or starter dog.
