Ireland road trip.

Ive never been to Ireland ( apart from 2 days on the lash in Dublin which I can barely remember) and have wanted to do a proper road trip around the emerald isle for years.

Me and Treacle ( I call her treacle because shes sweet, but doesnt move very fast laugh2 ) are thinking of a summer run over there.

Has anyone got any recommendations ? Tips, does and donts ?

We are looking doing half of the wild atlantic way, from the ferry port at Rosslare to Galway.

cheers

My advice would be "go for it!"
Went round the north, west and south coasts five years ago on the way from Aberdeen to Shelsley Walsh and had a great time.
Lots of photos here.

I can thoroughly recommend on in the South at Killarney if you fancy a posh pampering day for Treacle (Spa +30 points?). https://www.theeurope.com/

The Europa Hotel and its food are pretty wonderful for 1-2 nights. Get a water facing room high up and it will take all the bumpy road lumps out of you. Hunt around for a good price, they like Morgans.

There is a decent concert/show venue a five minute taxi ride away which is worth checking to see what might be on.

Assume you cover less ground per day in the south as the locals have worked out there is no hurry in life cheers

Most of the south west coast is stunning. My favourites, Glengariff to Lambs Head via Castletown Bearhaven. Return via north side of peninsula.

Glengariff heading north to Kenmare, Molls Gap and the ring of Kerry.

If you have the time heading further north to Galway in Connemara, then head towards the coast. In the early morning mist it's like travelling through a lunar landscape.

I'd have to disagree with you there. If I had to select one section of the Wild Atlantic Way I wouldn't want to repeat it's the Ring of Kerry. The Ring of Skellig, (in effect an extension of the Ring of Kerry is far better).

I videoed the entire WAW. Mizen Head was memorable.

50 years ago the Ring of Kerry was great. The Butler Arms Hotel in Waterville also a terrific place for golfists and memorable for me because, as a young boy, I fished for trout there in Lough Currane with Charlie Chaplin. However, these days the narrow road of the Ring is only really driveable one way because of all the coaches, nose to tail like herds of African elephants, full of Chinese tourists. The area is best avoided.

I’m ashamed to say that I have never taken a car to Ireland.
Most trips have been related to my days at work and always included sufficient alcohol consumption to prohibit any thoughts of driving.
cheers
