The problem with the prosecution of soldiers over events in Ulster is that it does now seem one-sided, the page having been turned on so many terrorist atrocities. A truth and reconciliation committee such as was held in South Africa might have been a good idea in the province.

Of course, it's not the people who really should be held responsible who find themselves in the dock; Colonel Derek Wilford, in command on the ground in Londonderry that day who deliberately ignored a direct order not to send troops into the bogside, or Major General Robert Ford, head of the Army in N Ireland at the time who said shortly beforehand “I am coming to the conclusion that the minimum force necessary to achieve a restoration of law and order is to shoot selected ringleaders.” Of course not. It's just some poor bloody squaddy who happens to be the only one they can put together enough evidence for a prosecution.

I don't think they'll be doing it for the money John, lawyers working on legal aid cases usually average around £60 or £70 an hour, and that is a gross figure that has to cover their overheads like running the office and paying assistants.

But there will no doubt be some unsavoury types looking to make political capital out of it. Hopefully, being poorly paid, they'll also be crap at making their case and the Government will win and can refuse to let her back in.

Exactly, Giles. Which is why I believe there is a strong argument for not charging.

Mods please move this to the soapbox ?

Peeps can I suggest emotionally involved subjects are opened in the soapbox so the spiders don't list TalkMorgan as a subversive site? Google is doing a lot around this right now and soon the dark web will be joined by the dirtyish web which will be blocked by commercial filters. We are all grown up and respect each other but if the site gets a whack then we all suffer.

Emotionally I agree re the use of public funds being a little nuts but logically I believe it is right as outlined above. For me they would be better spent finding the people/things that made a young woman at the start of her life make such a dark journey. If for no other reason the public purse should be set to show others that WE are not animals. If it stops one future person believing we are bad it has done good.

The laws around legal aid payments to solicitors went south last year or maybe the year before. They have become lean beyond use so I am expecting the system to melt in the next few years sadly. If you are planning to do something naughty and claim legal aid better get on with it quickly.

I don't want to even think about the entire Soldier F thing. Nothing good will ever come from raking over this poisoned soil. A lot of people had agendas on all sides at those times. I just want to know who/why it is raised like this now. I might learn more from that than from such belated putative actions. With my due respect and sympathy to those who actually lost their loved ones.

I think I want a bad news filter applet for my browser. Today needs to be a good day as I am driving the Coupe and have fresh Daglet Noir dates, Strawberries and some Italian coffee.

Sorry MDS, not meant to be rude to you.

Just time to burn a little more petrol before dinner.

It's very easy to be black and white on the law v populism issue.

We should respect our laws, but also remember that however well intended and comprehensive, they cannot cover every situation.

Equally populism cannot be attributed to common sense, fairness and level headed thinking.

She willingly joined a terrorist organisation and supported the atrocities that they commit against US!

She has lost all rights to her UK citizenship and should be left to rot where she stands. She has no remorse and is a cancer in our society.

Get a grip!

I think its best to keep a forum like this politics free unless its something that affects the cars we drive.

The original post does raise some important issues however in my opinion its got nothing to do with Morgan Cars and should be discussed elsewhere.

I certainly agree with Alistair that moving this thread to the Soap Box would be a good idea, but I don't agree with preventing discussion - as Simon said just the other day, we are all adults and telling people what they may or may not discuss is not a good approach, we all saw what happened to EMog.

The problem with alternative forums is that Talk Morgan is a civilised place where we can discuss things in a rational manner. Many other forums, especially those with no filters for membership, are useless because they are dominated by crazy extremists and everything quickly descends to slanging matches driven by polarised black/white absolutism.

As with any thread, we are all free to ignore or disengage from discussions which have no interest.

If we are so keen to uphold the rule of law then she cannot receive British taxpayer-funded legal aid since she is not a British citizen.
