Just replaced the wiring loom on my 1984 +8, the new autosparks one is 99% the same as the old one. Inevitably there are some 'issues':

reversing lights on with ignition
gauge lights all on when battery connected
voltmeter has no reading

The loom is british wiring colour coded, I'm off to check all the live wires are appropriately connected (again!). Friends tell me current can flow both ways (I knew that), but didn't appreciate earth faults can make that happen in different circuits to where the fault is due to voltage differences at the earth.

I think I need a wiring diagram to check the wires go to the correct places
I've already checked GoMog and early 1980's +8s are not in their library, is a concurrent 4/4 diagram close enough to follow?
Any tips on fault tracing would be greatly appreciated.

Not completely bald yet so I still have some hair to tear out

I have one for a 1985 +8 but it looks like it was printed some years previously, at the moment I am in-between moving houses but once I am in the new house and get my gear out of storage I will copy it if you still want it.

I haven't seen a diagram specific to the point in time you require. You may be able to deduce some information from the following

I now have some wiring diagrams from the factory, the appropriate one is very original as it is obviously hand drawn!

Not so much different voltages at earth points as much as missing/poor earth's allowing current to find a secondary route through something it shouldn't. Another light circuit for example leaving a false clue.

In order of faults you have:

Check green/blue wire from reversing light(s) goes to gearbox switch and nowhere else. Also check that other leg of light(s) has a good earth.

Check the common feed for gauge illumination red/white? wire connects to panel rheostat and that in turn is feed from common light switch bus via red/black? cable.

Voltmeter should be an easy fix. One leg to earth (black wire), other to switched feed from ignition switch (white wire), same feed as ignition coil.

Just to add I used used this wiring diagram as reference when offering above advice.

Apologies blush it should be green/brown wire you are looking for from gearbox switch to reverse light
