I can only comment on the 'double layer versions but https://1000mile.co.uk/ are excellent.

A friend who does ultra marathons recommended them and I thought he may be over egging how good they were but he wasn't.

Dave, take a look around the site but you'll find less 'sporty' versions in the Walking section but do stick with the double layer versions.

The word/name you are looking is Burlingtons (the ones with the metal stud in one sock). Mine last 15-20 years each time

I've heard bamboo socks are good, but no personal experience. Keep the Panda repellant handy though!

Dave is not alone in this annoying conundrum, some local Merino ones do seem to last well, and my best lasting were some sort of farmers ones that I nervously bought from a travelling salesman , they went broke too.

I tried bamboo socks. Very comfortable but lasted for about 4 wears!
