A bit random but does anyone else really love these, I developed the taste for them in Touws River (RSA) when the horse drawn milk cart delivered our milk daily. When the melon season was in all his customers would have one delivered weekly. We called in to pay the bill he wouldn't hear of any additional payment he was spreading a little joy around.

So when they appear in the shops here her good self picks up a couple, well I always get them chopped up etc and she is not bothered about eating them unlike me who will finish a whole one at one sitting after dinner. The only drawback being the high water content makes you pee all night long but it's well worth it.

Some inventive yachties I have sailed with used to inject a watermelon with rum , gin or vodka and leave in fridge overnight then hand out slices of the same after a race . We were away on board and not driving afterwards....

I lived in sunny South Africa for almost 20 years, yes injecting water melons with tipple of your choice is common practice over there, even better is a Lychee party, in season my local golf club used to hold the annual lychee party, no alchohol was served, but several barrels were filled with lychees and marinated in various spirits for a few days prior to the party, bacardi, vodka, gin and captain morgan rum are very well suited to this application, as i said one did not drink but simply consumed lots of lychees.... the effect was magnificent
