So Im tempted to buy an Aero 8 and looking at what I want and what I can buy are two different things :-) Few questions

1. Series 2/3/4 - prices range from 39k-55k whats the sweet spot, Series 4 with side pipes
2. Engines and Gearbox - I feel it should be manual but seems a lot of later series are autos - but without paddles - good experience or not?
3. Roof - digging around there doesnt seem to be a roof option aftermarket or generally - is that correct?
4. General areas - reliable? Is engine rock solid? rust or fall apart etc?

I would put mileage on it and drive it, have a Maserati GTS at present and normally do at least 8k a year depends on how much time I get, not one for sitting in a garage and not having fun, depreciation not worried about, but are they still reliable. Assume with that engine yet but having owned a Porsche 996 and put 120K miles on it before the engine gave way and a nice 10K bill... rather not go there.

Anything else I've missed? I do love the one that I think its Michael selling in London, but like with the Maser creeping past my budget..

Thanks

8,000 miles a year is still pretty low. I averaged 20,000 a year on my series 3 and closer to 30,000 a year on my series 4. Didn't ever have an engine problem. S3 was manual, S4 was auto (no paddles). My S5 is also auto without paddles. My GTN has had no engine issues either, manual gearbox.

Thanks, Shooter, would assume engine rock-solid as BMW. The GTN looks gorgeous and spent the last few days researching the models to understand S1-S5 then saw GTN, 11 made !!!! gorgeous. Need my Crypto trades to kick in :-)

Assume as the Aero 8s are so rare that prices just remain high, as long as not going crazy on the mileage whilst with the Maser I've put 30K on it and its just reducing in price.

In terms of driving position I'm 6ft2 any issues with that, looks like a wide cockpit and legroom ok. I'm digging around to see if can find one locally (Lancashire) for sale, I do live Michaels S4 and have a barn waiting to put it in lol, but started thinking about 35K budget but that's probably not looking like will cut it.

Welcome, where are you based? Doing this in an email trail will be quite long! Many of us are more than happy to share but perhaps over a pint of the prefered sauce so we can go through it in depth and do it justice. I have an S2 manual and a coupe auto which is similar to an S4 (when auto came in). I love them both and they are different.

The S2 manual is like a rocket ship, grown up caterham driving experience. The S4 is a tourer which has a big lazy torque curve and can pick up it skirts a fly when you use the manual selector and squish the carpet. Running costs are nothing like a 911 or Maserati if you work with your dealer.

I bought the Coupe with the intention of making it my daily car however it did not work out. It's a mistress not a wife. I don't mean that in a rude manner. For either wives or Morgans, you make a commitment,. There is a reason you make a commitment and it creates memories.Be near your dealer but assume parts take time to arrive. The truth is if you need it every day it will be a challenge. Shooter is Captain high mileage.

For background I had a personal import Skyline GTR33v and did 100k miles in it at 600 bhp and 9 mpg so I have a petrol problem! That was replaced by a Phaeton V10 during a really high mileage period, W216 CL600, E63s Estate RS6PE and now an ML63. My name is Alistair and I have a petrol addiction.

Yet we own two now and it will take something odd to release one back into the pool of loonies that want to love one. Nothing makes me happier. It gets under your skin.

Just time to burn a little more petrol before dinner.

Hi Alistair

Live near Clitheroe/Skipton - in the middle lol.

The Maser is a tourer, pulls great but weighs two tonners and is more noise then snap your neck. The S2 sounds more fun and that was the original look I saw at Southport flower show about 8 years ago... fell in love and so nearly traded my porsche in but that was my daily driver and going south in the Morgan on the M6 seemed a waste.

Yep I have petrol problem to around 12 mpg if lucky but open the windows and dont care, the Morgan would be something for the lanes and hills, Im 1 hour from lakes, some amazing twisty roads near me and great to get out in the open, I also run a large car show here so would take her to get looked, sat in and prodded.

In terms of maintenance assume as BMW engine then thats ok to service etc, is it more just odd parts that are old and not generally in stock hard to get.

It sounds like Im best off test driving the models to see which fits best, the S4 in awesome colours Im addicted to and love the updated interior but the S2 has the classic front look and sounds more like manual aggressive driving that I dont have in the Maser, its a electronic clutch and paddles, changes in microsends but not like dipping clutch and dropping the stick.

Hi Lancman,

Servicing an Aero can be challenging, the engine is BMW but the car was built by Morgan.
Depending on year you may have to remove the bonnets and front cowl to access the engine to service, some models will need wings off as well to access the engine, have a chat with some previous owners they will help as much as they can.
My aero 8 was the best car I have ever owned, the soundtrack when opened up was terrific.
Good luck in your search, it will be fun!

Ian

PS Lifes motors in Southport were great at looking after my Aero, The mechanic there was very knowlegable, no connection just a very happy customer.

Good to know that someone close, my best mate is 30 year time served police mechanic, old school rebuilds X5 engines on his driveway so if its more the access then all good. He does services on the maser now for me, which for room is a pain, have to remove half the top parts of the engine to replace spark plugs !!!

Yep for me V8 and an Xpipe or Hpipe open exhaust hood down and yippeeee.

Can't believe how cheap money is at present, looking at personal loans for half the money and that's what made me revisit and look again.

I’d say definitely drive a few, they are very different to most other cars, for me my S5 drove much better than the S3 that I had, although others say the opposite, if you fancy a trip South Richard Thorne have 3 or 4 in stock at the moment which would give you a chance to appreciate the difference between models.

Michaels, flip paint Aero is a beauty - if you are prepared for the attention!

But - don't discount the Series 1 either Lancman.

If you like the GTN then the S1 is a similar (albeit, less powerful) set up.

It has a narrower cockpit then the later Aero's but arguably a more 'track focussed' suspension set up.

It also has the 'marmite' headlamps and the 'gangster' hood and lower boot line - amongst other more subtle differences.

I may of course be slightly biased..... innocent

The S4 chassis is a fine place to be, either as an Aero, a Coupe or a Plus 8.
Our 2014 Plus 8 Auto is now at 40k miles, it still makes me smile, even if driving, hood up, back from York to Salisbury in the pouring rain.

Quite honestly I cannot think of any car at any price I'd rather own.
