The local garage has my car to fit a new cable. Does anyone know if this is a generic say Ford cable and off what car?

Just a shot in the dark, but since so many MMC fitted components are Land Rover based could that be the case here. I know early LR's at least used a dedicated transmission drum brake with shortish cable.

I thought I had one in the garage but that turned out to be a throttle cable , not handbrake. As Richard points out that was a Rover part. However I doubt the handbrake cable is anything other than a bespoke item. Try Melvyn or Krazy Horse in your part of the world?

It's worth reminding everybody that the rubber protector sleeves which run a short distance from the backplates, can split and allow moisture to penetrate into the cable, which then rusts.

From underneath the tool tray you can access the compensator/cable split, and might be able to get some 3 in 1 down the holes.

Bumble was starting to show some cracking of the outer sheaths, and I wrapped both sides in electrical tape, after getting some oil down the cables.

It's a service check item...…..!!

These days I would have thought that the cable should have been stainless.

Dave, no obvious wear on the cable casing at all. BHM have told the garage there were 2 lengths one 2 inches longer than the other. It could be a short version was fitted & the routing caused a failure. I'll chase KH to see if I have any warranty as the cable is under 1 year old and the car had done 7 k since it was fitted.
