Had similar heart problems about ten years ago. Aged 65 Doc said try cutting out coffee, this didn't make much difference. Got sent to see a specialist who did all the heart test and scans. The diagnosis was that all mechanical part were ok but there was a small electrical problem. He said it was quite common all part of the ageing process and nothing to worry about. He put me on one beta blocker a day. So far it has kept the problem at Bay. Still only drink decaffeinated where possible.

I feel for you guys, but it could be worse. Imagine having to give up alcohol in the evenings.. no wine with supper.
I drink 3 or 5 coffees a day, mostly before 3pm, but even if I have an espresso at 10pm I still sleep well. But in the afternoon I drink water and in the evening, red wine.

There is a popular misconception about espresso that it contains a lot of caffeine. The reverse is the case: passing hot water through the coffee very quickly extracts much less caffeine as the process was originally adopted to reduce the amount of acidic flavour extracted from the beans.
If your palpitations continue you should ask your doctor for a week-long cardiac monitor as you may be getting paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. This can be dangerous as it predisposes to stroke. Alternatively you can buy on-line an AliveCor monitor which is a device that attaches to a mobile phone and with which you can carry out a one lead ECG trace yourself whenever you have palpitations.

I feel for you guys, but it could be worse. Imagine having to give up alcohol in the evenings.. no wine with supper. Regrettably, I have had to do that too. Any wine in the evening is guaranteed to have me awake in a cold sweat in the early hours of the morning, I suspect there is a conflict with one of my meds. I now restrict my alcohol intake to a weekend lunchtime beer, coupled with an afternoon nap.

When I worked in Cardiff there was a Flavia coffee machine in a vestibule outside my office. Nice coffee. Started the day with a coffee and if busy in the office top ups of Colombian blend...sachet machine. Sometimes by lunchtime th girls would “advise” me to go over decaf as I was showing signs of caffeine stimulation. Never had any side effects despite several cups a day. I don’t drink tea, just coffee. We had regular medicals in work too and nothing untoward showed up in ecg, blood etc. I was once quizzed about gout as my uric acid level was near the top of the range. Bugger me if I didn’t have a gout attack a couple of months later. Doc gave two options.... Tablet a day forever....... Try managing it. Took second option and changed diet ( reduced higher purine containing foods, lots offavourites in there) drank cherry juice daily and ate cherries as much as possible. It worked and now if I suspect a slight gouting I take anti inflammatories to knock it back. No attacks for a few years now.
