Not sure how many of us are affected but from October 2021 there is proposal to extend the London Ultra Low Emissions Zone out to the North South Circular Boundary.

As I read the regulations currently, all vehicles older than 40 years are exempt, but those between 1981 and 2005/6 are likely to be charged ÂŁ12.50 per day for driving within the zone.

Diesel vehicles complying with Euro 5 or 6 are exempt (usually 2005/6 onwards) , as are petrol cars complying with Euro 4 standards.

I admit that a degree of self interest here as my +8 is 1999 , but according to the last MoT certificate does actually comply with Euro 4 standards but the car is not homologated to this and therefore it would be subject to the charge. The irony is that I live less than a mile from the boundary and all my motoring is done outside the boundary except this first and last mile.

Apparently there has been a lot of discussion on bike forums about this topic and there is a place in Stratford , E London who specialise in prepping older bikes to get them to Euro 4 and this is then notified to Transport for London (TfL) who then add the bike to their list of exempt vehicles. I was hoping to track down this place , to date without success, to investigate whether a similar service could be offered for cars. I am pretty sure there must be a huge demand for this so I suspect someone is set up (or is about to set up) an operation to cater for this group of cars/vans etc.

I appreciate that this is probably a minority interest topic for most , but has anyone else come across this and able to offer some advice.

Thanks in advance.

I just checked my 2002 Plus8 on the TFL site.
No ULEZ charge due for this vehicle
Was the result

Do you have GEMS eco controlling fuel and ignition ? Mine is Hotwire and it defintely does incur the charge.

Yes it has the Gems system.
I simply put the car registration into the search on the link.
So according to TFL I would be ok for ULEZ but still need to pay the Congestion charge if in the area covered.
Unless there are errors in their data! It is a local Authority after all. I had to correct the data for Building Control for an incorrectly input set for a house I just sold. They had incorrectly entered the wrong address for electrical work.

Surely there is some sort of exemption for residents?

If they were being honest about it, they’d go after the emissions from Londoners’ central heating installations too.

They are, the gas mains will probably be changed to hydrogen according to the latest statements from the UK government starting in around 6 years time.

This was mooted initially but then dropped. They really are trying to get a "cleaner" car pool within the London suburban area.

However one point I have discovered it that the bike work is focusses on NOX emissions and tends to play much less attention on hydrocarbons and CO. Not sure how you can adjust an engine to give lower NOX, possibly dropping the compression ratio (but obviously not keen to do that)

It appears you can tweek the Nox.

The recent Euro6 4d regs that came in to place, September 2018, together with the WLTP fuel consumption tests in the case of the Golf R 2 litre dropped the power from 306 bhp to 296 bhp in order to get under the 2018 Euro Nox limits.

Previous to this, Europe majored on CO emmissions and the States on Nox.

There is a suggestion it was a change to the exhaust after treatment.
