The new PlusSix is a fantastic car, but ... #601873

I recently had the pleasure of test driving the new Plus Six. Very good build quality, a little bit more space inside, breathtaking acceleration, stiff chassis, comfy suspension, perfect automatic gear change, power steering …. . It’s by far the best Morgan I have ever driven; it’s almost a perfect car. But this perfection is, in my eyes, the negative point of this fantastic car. It drives easily, effortlessly, modern, like a BMW Z4 disguised in a Morgan body, but not like a "classic" Morgan.
Would a dedicated Morgan fan, like I am, really want to miss the ancient driving feel, the squeak and rattle, the joy of changing gears, …. ?
In some years this Plus Six will perhaps become my favourite choice (if I then can afford to spend around 100 grand on such a "toy"). But for the moment, I’m young enough to enjoy driving my fellow Plus Four.
The only detail I now miss in my +4 is the space to comfortably rest my left foot – due to the automatic transmission, the +6 has no clutch pedal.

Wow, lets go back the horse and cart...only joking Frank laugh2

It is aimed at a different market...however, Morgan MUST move - or die.

Honesty means doing it right, even when no one is looking!

Your both right from different perspectives. When I replaced my toy car I had the choice of going modern with a 3 year old model or going older, back to 2003 with a manual car with just basic electronics. I chose the latter. I wanted something I could understand. I didnt see why a sports car should ever need "driving modes". I didnt see 7 or more gears as being either necessary or desireable.

But I have a nasty feeling that I am being a luddite. The acid test will be when Lotus produce a new Elan. Will t be stripped out, light weight with the minimum of electronics ( abs, switcheable traction, no more) or will it be festooned with farkles like modes, electric soft tops, power steering? I hope it will be simple and fast. I fear that it will be complicated and heavy.

Meantime the Plus 6 is close to where is should be. Shame about the faux 1930s styling and that damn gearbox

I think I agree with most of Frank's comments. I drove a Plus Six yesterday, and really enjoyed it, but it is very different from the Plus 4. Just a few thoughts...

The current Plus Six steering wheel has a very thick rim. I would definitely change the wheel for this reason, as well as the looks! The guys at Williams confirmed that there should be no problems in replacing the wheel, or modifying the gear lever.

I was pleased to see this...

- an easy-to-read speed display, right in front of the driver.

The Plus 6 auto box is nice for busy traffic in its standard mode, but I would end up using the Sport modes most of the time. I was surprised that the paddles feel like clicky switches - there is very little movement when you pull on the paddle.

The car is also too quiet, so it really needs one of the sports exhaust options to bring the sound to life.

I found the seating postion fine - I am about 5'6", and I felt at home in the seats after a couple of minutes.

I enjoyed the Plus Six enough to be fairly sure I'll order one next year, but also I would be interested to try out a smaller version whenever Morgan produce one.

Another thought strikes me. I'll need to find around £50k in order to buy a Plus Six. You could do a lot of interesting modifications to a Plus 4 for that kind of money!

Agreed ! Only a Morgan driver would complain about a Morgan being perfect !

Good overview from Jon, matches my experience.
But I'm going to keep my Plus 8...it does 95% of what the Plus 6 does, and sounds wonderful.

Mods on a plus 4 aren't going to get it anywhere near a plus 6 ! Suspension/chassis/engine change etc might make some difference !
