My Series V 4/4 Comp is one of a few lowlines made in the early 60's, never heard of a +8 Lowline.

My first Morgan was a 2001 4/4 "Lowline". Note the wider gap between the headlights and the cowl compared to regular 4/4's. I.I.R.C. it had wider "Cobra" type wire wheels as well but the body was the standard width.

The one thing we are sure about is there was never a +8 "lowline"

Certainly the 60s +4s is where the term originated , where "lowline cars" had the 4/4 body on the +4 chassis and running gear for the +4SS, and although the history is a bit vague some of the later +4s also were built with a "lower" line body but did not have the full +4SS treatment.

The use of the term for the 4/4 also seems to lack clarity but a consensus seems to be evolving. Not sure I would take Michael Palmer's book as a definitive reference, but it is a pretty good effort.

I've always understood the term lowline to refer to a 4/4 with wider wings. Nothing else was different in my memory unless you ordered wider wheels of course.
I'm almost sure there was no body difference. Never heard of a lowline plus 8. There is the very slight complication that the old 4 seaters had a higher bonnet and windscreen line than the 2 seater. But that didn't affect the term lowline, if my memory is correct (which is a gamble, of course!).

Has the 4/4 cowl always been at the same height or was it changed when the headlight height was altered?

Yes, body size remained the same, but the wings are wider. I think there's been a bit of confusion between the "Lowline Body" being used to identify 1960's Plus 4s with 4/4 bodies on them and later "Lowline cars" - 4/4s with standard bodies but wider wings.

GPWM.

The term body and wings have to be taken separately.

It's the wings that are different on the 4/4 Lowline.

Big difference: +4 and +4SS, a modern 4/4 still looks like the SS, it´s a low line.

Now I am confused.

Looking at Jens' photo's, I can see the obvious difference in the radiator and cowling height, hence Lowline.

The 4/4 with the Lowline body is simply a standard 4/4 with wider wings.

So in Morgan speak there are 2 different meanings to the term Lowline.

Yes, depends on the era we are talking about. Jens photos are of a 1955 +4 and 1962'ish +4SS.
The 4/4 Lowline you refer to Bob is from much later, around the start of the 2000s (probably 2002, but my memory may not be quite correct on the date smile ).
