Hello all, Happy New Year

We are planning a road trip in the Morgan for September of 2020 to run from the ferry at Bilbao (or Santander) following a rough path along the foothills of the Pyrenees to Barcelona and then on north east to Provence and up the east side of France home. I’m hoping you may have some recommendations for accommodation along the way, points of interest, must see places and routes to take. I estimate we will be away for 3 weeks.

It seems to me that accommodation with suitable parking is important, we are pretty laid back and comfortable with modest B&B or full on Relais Chateau or the Spanish equivalent of either. We are also happy to busk it, finding places as we go.

I realise this is an enormous brief and so happy to follow links to recommended sites and follow up on any advice, and frankly I’ll be grateful for any help.

Kevin

I am sure you will get lots of responses.
In 2017 drove: Calais, Reims, Lyons, Grenoble, Route Napoleon, Grasse, Camargue, Carcassone, Andorra, along Douro in Spain, Soria, Zamora, Pinhao, Leon, Picos Mountains, Biarritz and then home up the west coast of France via Calais to Cambridge. Have all the hotels and route. Around 3,000 miles.

Also driven to Barcelona a couple of times en route Majorca and across Northern Spain (Rioja) in the Morgan.

Send me an email/message if you want me to share hotels/routes etc.

As for acommodation, check out https://www.parador.es/en in Spain and https://www.logishotels.com/fr/ in France. The Paradores Nacionales in Spain are superb but expensive. Rather quiet, dignified and splendid food. Often situated in old castles, monasteries, palaces or the like. Might resemble the Relais de Chateau, although I don't know them. The Logis de France are much simpler (and cheaper), often run by a family, small, charming and clean. Always good food. I have used them on a bicycle holiday in France twice and was very happy, did not have the need for grand luxury. I think they also have a branch in Spain, but this you might check out. I know northern Spain quite well. It is wonderful - beautiful nature, nice coastal towns, tons of seafood, good wine. Santiago de Compostela is stunning (but far west) - according to legend the burial place of St. James and one of the three holy cities (apart from Rome and Jerusalem) in the Catholic universe. A goal for pilgrims, lots of historical buildings. I know this is in the wrong direction as you are concerned, but could not resist.....

We stayed at this place a few years ago whilst on a similar trip inout (then) Z4

https://www.hotelcasadelmarques.com/en/

Absolutely fantastic 'old' Spain. Very Spanish, slightly touristy but not in a brash way. The Hotel was probably the most characterful we've encountered in Europe and pretty good value. And there's secure gated parking at the rear. About 30 minutes from Santander.

This is all great info, keep it coming. We have booked the ferries and will be away for three weeks and so plenty of time to explore.
Really appreciate all your responses

The Parador Hotels are a true recommendation for Spain.
You get good value for money and parking was always fine for me

I echo the sentiments above re Paradors and Logis.

Also - well worth a night or 2 in San Sebastian. The town is lovely - we had 2 nights and were able to spend a whole day exploring. We stayed at Astoria 7 which was walking distance from the old town and has underground parking (IIRC you may need to book a space). https://www.astoria7hotel.com/en

The Pyrenees were lovely and a lot quieter than the Alps.

Don’t plan on spending much time in Andorra if it is on your route - not a lot to see or do unless you like large ski resort hotels.

Paul, I am with you when it comes to Andorra.
Do watch roaming fees there too!

South of Bilbao this may be an interesting hotel.
Prebooking recommended, not a cheap place but worth a visit if you are interested in modern architecture.

Kevin if travelling up the east side of France then a visit to the national auto museum in Mulhouse is a must https://www.citedelautomobile.com/en Possibly better known as the "former Schrumpf collection" but so much more than that.

In 2018 when visiting we stayed at the Hotel Bristol right in the centre of Mulhouse and it was very good value. Sounds like a great trip you are embarking on...

I will be taking my M3W through France and across the Pyrenees to Finisterre, returning via Bilbao, for two weeks from the end of August and another group of Three Wheelers will be going down to Madrid, returning like me through the Picos to Santander/Bilbao. Our respective paths may cross.
