M3W55 I have stayed in the lighthouse at Finisterre a couple of times and highly recommend it. A good place to stay just outside santander on arrival/departure is a paltcio at Punte Arce

The hotels in Northern Spain are of a high standard and good value, it is one of my favourite places to tour and we return every couple of years.

We are using Brittany Ferries holidays for a Picos Tour. They seem to use good hotels so you might be able to get ideas from them.
As said before Paradors are excellent. The one in Leon is stunning.

Nice Hannes, it will be our wedding anniversary so this might fit that bill perfectly

The Logis de France are much simpler (and cheaper), often run by a family, small, charming and clean. Always good food. I have used them on a bicycle holiday in France twice and was very happy, did not have the need for grand luxury. I think they also have a branch in Spain, but this you might check out. I know northern Spain quite well. It is wonderful - beautiful nature, nice coastal towns, tons of seafood, good wine. Santiago de Compostela is stunning (but far west) - according to legend the burial place of St. James and one of the three holy cities (apart from Rome and Jerusalem) in the Catholic universe. A goal for pilgrims, lots of historical buildings. I know this is in the wrong direction as you are concerned, but could not resist.....

Thanks Robbie, supported by several others so we are focussing on these.

Absolutely fantastic 'old' Spain. Very Spanish, slightly touristy but not in a brash way. The Hotel was probably the most characterful we've encountered in Europe and pretty good value. And there's secure gated parking at the rear. About 30 minutes from Santander.

Gary

Yes nice recommendation, we've added it to the list. this trip may end up taking years we we include everything.

We have only stayed at two Paradors in Spain, so certainly not an expert, and we may well have been unlucky, the buildings are simply stunning, but as a state owned enterprise, we did find that the service and attitude was perhaps more typical of civil servants rather than the hospitality industry.

We were very pleased with all the Paradors we used in our trip last year.

The only real drawback was that all of them open their restaurants at 20:30 for evening service - which fits the Spanish lifestyle but we found a bit on the late side.

yes I noticed that some are quite austere and have that "institutional' look about them. I guess we'll choose according to the circumstances. The plan is starting to come together.

I have stayed in the paradors in Vic (near Barcelona), Calahorra in the heart of Rioja, Soria and Zamorra. All are great and I have had no problems parking the roofless Morgan. Why not contact the Spanish Morgan Club for advice/see if they have anything going on? I have on a couple of occasions visited one of the Rioja Alta wineries, owner had a Morgan. Looked after regally. Andorra is great for cheap fuel.
