That certainly is a surprise. Here’s another: I just watched a dvd of “The Crown” series 1, which shows a squadron of Lancasters or Lincoln’s performing a fly past over Whitehall in 1940. Quite an achievement.

At the time the Merlin was relatively un developed and the DB 605 engine from the 109G was certainly an advance on the then Merlins with a single speed, single stage supercharger and SU carburettor. The later Merlins, starting with the XX had 2 speed, 2 stage superchargers and pressurised Bendix Stromberg carburettors, which were as effective as fuel injection.
Daimler Benz and Rolls Royce were in a development race, it is generally believed that Stanly Hooker, the brain behind RR's superchargers, was the winner. The final version of the Merlin produced over 2500bhp, as much as the rather larger Griffin.

As with much in the Mail, a few facts have been spun into a plausible, but misleading story.

The reverse was more common.

Quite a few Me109s were built with Merlin Engines in post war years - the Buchon was in service until the 60’s in the Spanish Air Force.

Wikipedia

Some of these were used in the making of the film “Battle of Britain” to represent the original Me109.

Yes after filming Battle of Britain an American bought around 10 of them and stored them in a hanger including a rare dual control one which is now at Sywell and managed by Richard Grace .
I put a thread up on TM when he was selling them off around 2 years ago I think, the Buchon is a fairly common animal.

This months copy of FlyPast has an excellent feature on the Buchon and also a Tempest which Richard and the crew are hoping to return to the air this year with a Centaurus engine making it the only one in this country.

Excellent publication - get it on subscription - my copy of the most recent one has already been passed on to my father.
