I managed to get the Morgan out yesterday for the first time in 10 weeks.

I'd almost forgotten how bad the rear brakes were.

Heres the background.

Had a fair amount of brake judder suggesting the drums were worn ( judder also apparent when pulling handbrake) so I had the drums skimmed by a local but well respected auto engineering firm. DTI showed they were nicely machined afterwards.

Driving the car and the judder had gone but still an odd 'swish-swish' rotational noise on braking, then the car was laid up.

Now driving it yesterday theres still no judder but the swish swish noise is becoming more of a clunk clunk rotational noise. My thinking is the drums are not true ( despite my measurements) and the swishing/clunking noise is the shoes moving slightly inside the drums. Everything is correctly fitted and securely fastened.

I'd quite like to try new/replacement drums but at £350 per pair new, its an expensive trial. I cant find a used pair to try either.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

I have the same clunk clunk, but only when appling brake, and more usual in hot weather after a run.

I have yet to find the cause, despite having hubs checked.

Update -

I think I may have found something interesting.

The slave cylinder clip wasn't secure. That awful design (also used on MGBs) which uses a "C" clip into grip into a groove only had one lug located in the groove. A fair bit of fiddling and now all 3 are securely located and the slave seems much more secure.

I'll check the other side too. Perhaps not today and the sun is shining into the garage now so Its a bit warm for crawling under the car.

I get that too especially in hot weather, as I expect many others do.
Removing the rear wheels, cleaning the splines and very liberally greasing seems to cure it...until the next time!

I have the opposite problem: swish swish from the rear nearside that gets louder as the brakes warm and then goes away when they are hot. If I give the brake pedal the lightest of touches the noise goes completely only to return when I lift off. Needless to say the brakes have been checked a couple of times by my dealer but nothing abnormal found. No effect on brake performance.

I went out for a run last Monday and was getting a 'wheel speed' twittering, again it went when I applied the brakes. Narrowed it down to the rears by using the handbrake.

Found that if I pulled the handbrake very slightly when I was moving, the noise stopped. Then found that if I pushed the hand brake away from me, it also stopped, so came to the conclusion that the handbrake adjustment was a little tight. Loosened it off half a turn at the rear axle. Hopefully this will have solved it (although not been out since).

I've had this for donkey's years, loud enough to be noticeable, not enough to be annoying. Worse in some weather than others. It's noticeably louder when driving close to walls, which confused me for a while as I assumed it would be coming from the front for the echo to not be lost behind. Like you, if I touch the handbrake at all it goes away. Up on the lift, the wheels spin freely. If you start and run the engine in gear on the lift the wheels rotate without making the noise in any gear. But if I slacken the handbrake mechanism the handbrake doesn't work well enough for my taste. Whenever I try something and go out for a test drive, the noise seems to go away, then reappears a few days later. New brake shoes didn't fix it. I've given up now and just see it as my car wittering to me as we drive along.

Update.

A little evening fiddling and I think the clip is loose in the groove.

Are they as bad to fit as I expect?

And are they specific to the Morgan cylinder or will a Mini/MGB one do the job?

Others may know better. But the clip is slightly "domed" so when fitted it holds the slave cylinder secure. Hence they are difficult to fit, which has prompted a tool to be made obtainable from MGOC to facilitate fitting. Can never use the search engine but their is a thread on here explaining its use, including a U tube clip.
