After 5years of ownership I’ve finally achieved the engine performance, tune, and exhaust note I’ve been looking for.

Current state of engine set up and exhaust:

1. Stage 1 using S&S Stealth high flow air filter and modified stock exhaust. See notes below.

2. Garage 56 Stage 2 cams and ECU mapped for Stage 2.

3. HD6R12 spark plugs gapped to 0.040”. I use these because they have a fixed terminal nut.

4. Red Line 20/60 V Twin synthetic engine oil. Recommended by my local S&S master mechanic who owns an Indian dealership and high performance motorcycle shop. Added benefit is quieter engine noise.

Notes:

I originally fitted the Morgan Aero Racing Stage 1 exhaust pipes but they didn’t produce the exhaust note I was looking for. Performance was fine with Stages 1 and 2 but the engine still pinged under load in certain gears. I should note I did have a rain sock fitted over the air filter with this set up. Recently after reading about stock exhaust modifications in this forum I decided to drill out the front solid baffle in the stock exhaust pipes using a 38 mm hole saw shown in pics above. I left the cats in place and the rear baffles untouched. Outstanding exhaust note I was happy with and good engine performance but in lower rpms the engine seemed to run rough producing a lot of vibrations and rattles in the vehicle like when I first bought it ( didn’t do this with the Morgan Aero Racing pipes ) and still pinging under load. Yesterday I decided to relieve exhaust backup pressure slightly by enlarging all holes in the rear baffle using a 5/16” black oxide 12” aircraft drill bit. I also cleaned and reoiled the Stealth air filter using S&S red air filter oil and left the rain sock off. They claim the rain sock doesn’t impede air intake but when you look at it intuitively I don’t believe it.

I went for a drive today to let the ECU readapt to these changes. I can’t believe the difference. My engine now seems to be in perfect tune. Very smooth everywhere. No excessive vibrations in the vehicle. Really free reving with rapid run up and great torque and no pinging now under load. Exhaust note is perfect, smooth baritone.

I now feel I have this engine and exhaust note where I want it. Very happy!

Next step custom Ohlins.

Ohlins are on my bucket list as well.

Did you put in the roller rockers when you did the cams? I did and the engine revs freely without hesitation. Some of that is due to Morgan Customs new fuel system.

The most difficult part of all that work was changing the rocker studs that are longer and come with the rocker kit from S&S. They are a bugger to get out!

Hi Lightspeed,

I have not done roller rockers yet but something to think about.

I have been wondering about the rain sock. The Harley plugs are a good idea, unfortunately need to go to a Harley dealer to pick them up. I think I will swap my plugs out as well.

The roller rockers are a work of art but the fuel system upgrade Emil sells had a bigger benefit for smooth running and starting for me.

As for the plugs, i tried the loctite red on the tip so they dont come loose. Only a small dab and it seems to work fine.

So Emil’s fuel system maintains fuel line pressure? Has everybody noticed a smoother running engine using this system?

Has anybody noticed better engine performance with the Walbro fuel pump upgrade?

How often does everybody replace their fuel filter?

Emils fuel system is good for easier starting and smoother running and quicker throttle response.

Here is a Morganeer who is to be commended for his selflessness and sportsmanlike attitude, as he kindly shared the dimensions of his engine-turned panel with me, and recommended the shop to do the work. Now we have him again sharing the details on his engine and exhaust system, which I will follow.
Of note, I believe this person makes a living operating on one of the most delicate structures in man, the eye. One wrong move and the patient can be deprived of his sight.
That he also has the gonadal reserve to pick up what must seem like monstrous implements to address his other passion in life, the M3W, is indeed noteworthy.

Best,

Tom

Sportster,

Did you tune the unlocked ECU for the Stage2 cams?

What is the biggest difference you feel from the cam upgrade?

Thank you!
