Hi Chaps

Can I tap into the collective knowledge of the TM massive ?

Daughters car has been laid up for 4 months while shes bee on furlough. She has to go in tomorrow so its up to dad today to 'check it ' !

Batteries is dead as a door knob which was expected but I jumped it from my Volvo and nothing but clicking and what sounded like the starter wanting to spin.
I reached down to the starter and hand rotated as best I could and tried again and it fired right up. Let it run for a while, turned off and turned on again ( still on jump leads ) Nothing but the click.

So im summarising the starter is kaput. but any tricks of the trade to get the thing working again before shelling out ? Id be tempted to slather the lot in WD40 laugh2

So on jump leads, all dash lights come on and we get a healthy click from the solenoid

Sticky starter ???

It could also be a corroded earth. On my Roadster I git this occasionally. I could get it to start by rocking the car in gear. I was ready to get a new starter but first checked & cleaned the earths and hey presto it started well & continues to do so.

It could be that the Matiz battery is dragging down the voltage on the Volvo if the battery has lost a cell or two, when I jump over cars I always leave the donor car engine running which has been known to overcome this although not good practise it works. A quick check of the Matiz battery voltage after it is switched off after you get it running will answer this question probably.
Good luck.

John's is another probable.

Had a similar issue with my Corsa. Battery fully discharged - would jump start from my other halfs i30 but only with the i30 engine running. Took it for a run round the block, but even that not enough to get sufficent juice in the battery to get it started again.

Ended up pulling the battery out and charging it for 24hrs and has worked fine every since.

Can you get a voltmeter across that battery? If it’s below 8v you may struggle to get it to jump start. After 4 months it’s likely to be dead flat and will probably need replacing anyway. Hope you find. Better solution.

Sounds like corrosion due to lack of use has partially seized the tight fitting armature of the piggy back starter solenoid. A tap with a soft mallet (not hammer) will sometimes free and if someone else is simultaneously operating starter key a temporary cure is offered. Long term, have starter solenoid replaced or complete new starter motor.

First job is to clean the earth connection. I had similar on my 4/4 and after cleaning it was fine.
Second check is the starter solenoid. They can stick so the starter fails to engage with the flywheel. I had this in the 1970’s on a Maxi and a tap on the solenoid body with a piece of wood sorted it. The starter was turning but not engaging with the flywheel. As soon as I had the chance I cleaned the starter and solenoid. Job sorted. The solenoid was attached to the starter itself, basically an electromagnet that moved the starter gear into position to turn the engine then released it when the engine started.

Sad to say, my dad's Matiz did exactly this.

ECU gone.

Famous for it, apparently.

Tried a secondhand one. Lasted a month.

Heaven knows why, but it leads to all sorts of issues however, they're all different so good hunting.

It was the final straw for him giving up his licence, so big relief here..!
