This little thing was first spotted in our entrance room, first floor level, about a week ago, then spotted again two days later. Goodness knows how it got there because our entrance is up a flight of stairs, one floor above street level. Perhaps it climbed up a vine that grws from the ground up to the balcony. Naturally the whole room was dismantled in a search but somehow it had managed to hide. Yesterday we caught it trying to hide in a cupboard under the stairs to the next level.

It is a harmless baby Natrix tessellata (Dice Snake) They seldom stray far from water so it probably came in from the lake. We took it to the nearby riverbed and let it go with a certain amount of relief that we did not have to live with it in the house. Until it was caught we did not even know what kind of snake it was and there is always the doubt that it may be dangerous.

Wow, puts being afraid of a little spider into perspective, guess you living in Australia conditions you to such events. Rob, a relative of mine recalls his mother kept a spade at the house door to chop the heads of venomous snakes trying to get into the house.

Natrix tessellata was the European Reptile Of The Year 2009.
Not a very common creature any more.
A lucky animal to get your kind treatment with transport back to nature.
👍👍

If my mother had seen that, she would have been found in a cupboard on the next level and she wouldn't have needed the stairs to get there!

Dammit I’m struggling to refrain from using the words snake, trouser and bedroom.

Phew, I think I got away with it

I had a racing snail once, I took its shell off to make it faster.
Didn’t work. In fact it made it more sluggish
