Agree with those who recommend Nest cameras. Expensive, but work very well. I have 5 around the house.
Even if the police don't do much with the footage (we have the same issues in the US), it still has value for two other reasons:
1. The cameras themselves are a deterrent to some extent
2. The alerts allow you to keep an eye on things when away, and call the police if you see someone on your property who should not be there

The deterrent effect is good on the less experienced and bloody minded.

The more serious are best left to get on with it or you could face physical violence and they don't hold back which is why god invented insurance.

We use it more for monitoring the local deliveries and watching for problems before they occur.

Just time to burn a little more petrol before dinner.

Would be nice but I don't have room in our small garden.

My main use for the CCTV and alert was to keep an eye on who my teenage son was inviting back to the house while we were away. joy grouphug

I use the Ring system. I thought the video doorbell was a gimmick but its fun to see unwanted callers hide their faces after noticing the camera. Overall, pretty impressed and not too expensive.

shotguns and pig farms.

I've just gone right off pork. Which is a shame because we had a pork casserole for dinner tonight and there's quite a bit left over.

Yeah, I think pigs are great, but I wouldn't eat one.

There is a story circulating in the farming community (hopefully apocryphal) about a chap mending a roof on a pig unit. He fell through the roof and landed amongst the pigs. All they ever found was his watch.

Regarding my three garage breaking, the first time it took 17 weeks for the police to come out, I wrote to the police commissioner (twice) - no response, my local MP demanded he respond to me again twice - I am still waiting some 6 years on.

As far as insurance after the second time the insurance company refused to insure even with an extra alarm and cctv, it does have deterrent benefits, but is no good if the police fail to act. I now have five bolts on the garage door, a volumetric alarm, everything is chained to wall or floor anchors, cctv etc.
