Mate of mine got rushed to hospital last night with COVID breathing issues. Dead this morning.

Sorry to hear that. We know the feeling having lost 2 friends in the first onset.

Who had the great idea to keep schools open?

Probably a distant relation of the same idiot that allowed discotech to reopen here, or for that matter decided to reopen the borders to tourism, in and out!

More distantly related are all those people who decided visiting Italy in the middle of a pandemia was a great idea, and all those Italians that decided having a holiday where they could join crowds of like minded people all without masks.

TBM I suspect if Boris had locked down he would have been chastised by the press for costing the economy & causing people to loose jobs etc. Guess that is why it often has to be proved before decisions are made. The press really do stifle common sense.

Yes, we do seem to have a strange situation at the moment where instead of holding the government to account and keeping them honest, the mainstream press seems more intent on determining the government's policy for them.

But the mixing at schools has been taking place for months, how would 1 week less make any material difference?

And since they reopened transmission rates have gone through the roof, resulting in a second lockdown.

It's not one week less, it's one week more. Shutting schools for three weeks would seriously reduce the transmission rates and possibly help get things under control.

|II'll explain my reasoning, and then may be stop feeding the troll.

It is widely accepted that a) kids are often asymptomatic, and b) 14 days is usually enough for the virus to run its course and become non infectious.

We had very few issues in the first 5 weeks of term. A handful of children were isolating due to family members testing positive (many due to visiting older siblings at University), but we had no cases within the school community.

Cases started to creep up in week 6/7 and have massively increased after half term with both students and staff being ill and then testing positive.

A 14 day half term at the end of week 8 would have meant that, apart from those with a blatant disregard for lockdown rules, the vast majority of the school population would have been non infectious/COVID free on their return. We could then have had another 5+ weeks of non disupted teaching once they returned again. Herd immunity would still be happening, but with a firebreak to stop it spiralling out of control.

This cycle could be repeated until a proper vaccination programme was in place. Educational impact would be minimised, and disruption to parents (and therefore workplaces) would again be lessened, helping the economy.

That seems to make perfect sense to me. But since when did common sense feature in any government policy when they are so sensitive to influence from various self-interested parties.

Speaking to a friend in France today (Dordogne) sitting in his grounds in late afternoon sunshine, no less (git smile ) he said France got the lockdowns all wrong as well. They come out of their current lockdown 18th December and rumours abound that they will be lockdown again on the 2nd January. Thought it was nice to know we aren't the only EU (ex) to have incompetents running things.

Inadequate social distancing = a higher R number.

It really isn't rocket science. Obviously business won't shut down without government intervention, but every day on the news are crowds gathering around the world. Mostly with no regard for social distancing. The longer they do that, the longer this will go on, and many more will die.

We don't have a magic answer, and politicians are way too influenced by outside lobbies.
