Series 3 or Series 4 Comparisons and thoughts? #675995

Sorry another question from a newbie.
I had set my heart on a series 4 , but I know realistically these dont come up for sale very often.
I do have a maximum budget of 50k anyway so maybe I am also being a touch optimistic.

Anyhow to cut to the chase I may have the opportunity to look at a low mileage Series 3.
Are they (apart from the obvious changes of the larger engine, handbrake location and some other tweaks), drastically different?
Any differences in costs or driving experience between them?

I want to use it as a long distance tourer so want power and a relatively relaxed quiet drive on motorways and B roads.
I am coming from a Lotus so I do have an open mind!

Should I hang on for a series 4 or should I grab a low mileage series 3 if I get the opportunity?

Many thanks in advance,

Shaun

I'd be more interested in regular services in a Morgan dealer more than the low mileage, honestly.
Let me put in in this way, between a car with 15.000km that have seen only one service, I would go for a 70.000km car with yearly services, documented.

Shaun, I haven't driven an S3, but I have the S1 and S2, along with my S4. The S1 is owned by a good friend who also has an auto S4 SS Coupe, his preferred drive is the S1 every time. Despite having nearly 100BHP less than the S4, in the real world the S1 and S2 don't feel very different in performance. Both are fantastic tourers that eat up the miles, but are definitely not track focussed cars. However, between 2nd, 3rd and 4th they can be "more than adequate" and will keep up with most things cross country and what a sound track. No matter how far the drive, I always get out of mine disappointed it's over.

Aesthetically the S4 (& S3 I think?) has the adjusted front end, deeper boot lid, wider cabin and an easier to live with hood, although it's higher folded down position is not to everyones taste. The fuel tank has also been repositioned behind the rear seats resulting in this higher hood position, but gives a larger boot for touring. I recall that the S1 is a bit noisier (some say clunky) in the drivetrain due to the mountings being more direct, not a problem if you notice it on a test drive, later models got different more cushioned mountings but not sure if on S2 or 3.

I find my S4 pretty much water tight, the hood pulls up in one and fastens with two clips on the windscreen top. But I also use a storm cover over the cockpit, if parking away from the garage. The S1 hood is a bit more of a fiddle to erect, the S2 I drove had a hard top fitted so I cannot remember what the hood fixings were like.

With your Lotus heritage, you should be used to the trials and frustrations of low volume sports car manufacturers. The Aeros are easy cars to live with provided they behave, though most have the odd electrical gremlin from time to time. Having a good relationship with a trusted Morgan dealer is essential, as the marrying of BMW powertrain and electrics to Morgan engineering has some unique twists. Access under the bonnet is minimal, thankfully general servicing is fine but spark plugs and air filter changes require the wings and cowl to be removed, so best done by people who know how to do it.

Good luck with your search and enjoy the research.

I own an S1 and have driven an S5, in all honesty they are not to different in the way they drive. S1 feels more direct (S2s onwards got more compliant bushing rather than rose-joints) and responsive as a result but performance felt the same in my experience.

The biggest thing you will notice is in the interior, the roof and boot. The S2 onwards has a wider cabin, bit more space for relaxed touring, better glovebox and other creature comforts that aim it more towards GT than track (not that the S1 is a track focused car - just more so than later iterations), the boot size increases and the roofs tend to be a little better - but on a used car this is often down to whether the owner has looked after it, and fettled it to get it right. S4's also have option of an auto box if you so wanted one, not something I would usually have but ironically on these the auto boxes work quite well due to the huge torque and lazy nature of the engine.

I would buy on condition over anything else, but your budget is rather tight so you may be forced to buy an example that isn't mint to get the model your after if anything comes up. I haven't seen anything S3/4 around that price range for a while - mainly S1/2s.

Thanks very much for all your feedback so far, much appreciated.

Is there a comprehensive list somewhere of what the standard spec is on the different models ie if they have ABS, airbags, traction etc?

As Ale says not much, on top of the ABS EBD, there is an LSD.
I think driver and passenger airbags from S2 onwards.
Electric windows, aircon cooler, heated front screen.
Single DIN radio CD, (some later S4 had a larger fold out double sized screen that is hard to see in daylight, I'm told) and fairly useless speakers!
My S4 also has central locking to doors and boot, cruise control and headlamp washers.
Electric and manual boot lid release.
Adjustable steering column.
6 pot front calipers.
225 front and 245 rear tyres 40 profile on 18" standard wheels, though some on 35 profile 19" Aeromax wheels.
As hand built, made to order cars they are all different in terms of leather, colours and stitching. Different dash top and door top colours and then you get into the bonnet louvers. Standard is just a few for the heater intake, others have them full length down the top and some on the side too.

Yes, I think from S2 onwards it's a one pull up manual and two clips at the front. No side or rear clips or poppers, cloth roof and a plastic rear window. Reasonably quiet and draught proof for a soft top.

Oh, one other thing that varies are the exhausts. I think the standard are twin rear exit pipes, Librands do a very nice quad exit pipe system. Then you have single side exit pipes. Some later S4 & S5 have twin side exit systems.

Being a pre-owned car you get what you it's got. Mine has side exits, lovely you can almost hear each side pulsing, but the Librands quad rear system is great too.
