Too right John, it looks as if the cheap Chinese chips are losing their attraction now and proving quite costly.
VAG practise was to have at least two suppliers of specialist electrical parts to obviate just such an occurance, accountants rule I guess..

I read that they and other manufacturers expected much lower sales last year, than have actually happened and so ordered less chips from China.
Follows on well from Heinz's thread about the complexities and dangers of modern car controls. I do wonder how long the human race would last should the tinterweb be taken away from us?

A good point I suspect a lot of the current newly learnt/qualified drivers wouldn't be able to cope with a Traditional Morgan chassis. Yes I do appreciate that they wouldn't want one anyway.

Looks self inflicted to me, cancelled orders, long lead times down the supply chain, the parts manufacturer thinks "okay then we'll commit to someone else"
BTW, automotive OE parts purchasing techniques are very aggressive, & the old ethical style is lost, so VAG you reap what you sow !

Add in JIT (Jesus, it’s there) and reducing stocks means a continued flow of parts on time, of right quality, right variant to match model and it gets quite complex. Holding stock ties up money so a one time gain by reducing it appeals at face value. For it to work then suppliers must be set up correctly. I remember when in uni having to design stock control systems for manual management and then write a program for computer versions. Even including costing scenarios to find minimum cost taking stock level, zero stock ( loss of production or sales). When I was running Purchasing in the cigar factory we used Pentane to treat tobacco. Supplied in barrels. We had a projected production usage and got the supplier to hold a minimum stock at their local depot to cover inexpected demand/problems.Other engineering items were bought from up to 3 suppliers. We had preferred makes of some parts, Festo solenoids were one. The trouble with cars today is they are stuffed with high tech management and toys that are designed to replace on failure with mechanics losing basic skills. “ Computer says no” means unplug units and replace. It is simpler as the customer/ warranty scheme pays for minimum effort by the garage. There is a trend these days of throwing things away instead of repair. Built in obsolescence and lack of DIY skills. Changing bulbs on many cars needs dismantling the front of the car!

Is this short ordering of chips anything to do with the fishing rules being fought over with the Frogs over the channel?

Could be.... Worth investigating. A bit of leg work needed?
