This is not a good thing just as the scientists were beginning to get a grip of Covid New Zealand gets a new case after all the recognised procedures have been adhered to.

Is this a case of the virus altering again? ie it takes longer to activate and thereby be detectable?

She was in isolation and tested negative twice.

Maybe isolation/quarantine periods need to be increased?

Those were my first thoughts, this is a worrying prospect, we were warned about the survival techniques adopted by this virus but I had no idea of the pace of change.

Thank goodness the worlds finest are all looking at this problem.

This is how the New Zealand Herald reported this issue - gives a bit more info over the BBC version.

KEY POINTS:

* The new case of Covid-19 in the community is a 56-year-old woman.
* She travelled to Spain and the Netherlands late last year before returning to NZ on December 30.
* She went through MIQ at Auckland's Pullman Hotel and was released on January 13 after testing negative.
* She then travelled around the southern part of Northland, to about 30 different locations in areas around Mangawhai, Dargaville and Helensville, and became symptomatic on January 15.
* The strain is unknown but officials are acting on the assumption it is one of the new, more transmissible strains.
* She has four close contacts who have been tested and are isolating.
* Officials say it is 'too early' to speculate on any further response.

A 56-year-old woman visited 30 locations around southern Northland including cafes, restaurants and tourist attractions before developing symptoms and testing positive for Covid-19.

Officials are scrambling to contact trace the woman's movements and notify anyone who may have come into contact with her

Four close contacts have already been identified and put into isolation.

The woman has not been sent to a Government-run quarantine centre but is instead self-isolating at her Northland home.

Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins and Director General of Health Ashley Bloomfield gave details about the community case at a press conference at the Beehive this afternoon.

The woman arrived from London on December 30 and stayed at the Pullman Hotel MIQ facility in Auckland. The origin of the infection is not yet known and the strain is unknown.

It was too early to consider the response to the case, Hipkins said.

The woman tested negative twice during her stay in MIQ before she was released.

Viruses don’t disappear but mutate. Flu is an example. The hope is that the mutations don’t put the mutant outside the vaccine effectiveness. Vaccines are adjusted to affect mutant forms.
Covid19 is here to stay. Mutated forms being the normal pattern.
As I see it, 2021 will be a year of initial vaccination with subsequent repeats as with flu, coming in at a suitable future date. Repeated annual vaccinations from then on.
Smallpox is the only successful elimination and it (reputedly) only exists in laboratories for research and future safeguards.
I see the Guardian is under fire from Chris Witty for falsely reporting untrue or “edited” info from Israel about lower than proclaimed effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine. The Guardian has not signed up to codes of conduct for press reporting. Seems like the Daily Mail effect. Bullshit to sell news.

If Covid has taught us anything, is that there are many truths - some of them true.

Although they have been quite successful to-date, unfortunately there is no way NZ will keep it out, no matter how hard they try, they are possibly deluding themselves if they think they can. The sad element is that they are not going to start any form of vaccination till the second half of this year as they go into their autumn/winter.

And that some journalists and papers will do poor things to advance their own position without consideration of the impact.
Imagine being locked at home in one of the vulnerable groups with cancer and poor mental health and support at this time.
You read this and think that you will never get out again as new problems arise.

I hope they never get a good nights sleep again.

Just time to burn a little more petrol before dinner.

I agree this or variants of is a forever thing that's for sure.

I'm surprised NZ is so slow off the mark with a vaccination program as they have a truly remarkable leader of their nation.
