One of the things I really remember from my childhood at around 2 or 3 is being told off for scribbling on photos of my Dad driving trains. He worked for GWR & then BR. I thought they were all lost due to my naughtiness.
I inherited all the family photo albums as my sister wasn't interested . Today they she asked for a particular photo which led to me finding some of Dad on the footplate. He was based in Newton Abbott A great day for me despite lockdown gloom.

Plus I found one I think is of my Grandad Sam Child in the Army Ambulance Corp in WW1 . I can't read the what the board says. Does anyone recognise this?

I don't think so as my Dad's father was in the 3/4 Welch Regiment & my mothers father was from Birmingham & in the medical corps. Sadly it is a post card with nothing on the back of it.

I was lucky enough to get rides on the footplates of Castles & Kings from Paignton to the turntable at Goodrington & back.

This might be worth a shot John..

It works accurately for Heather's Dad's record of service, I just checked it out and it's good up to 1951 and stops when he was a Lieutenant but misses out the intervening bits up to and including when he was made up to a Major so it should suit your trace being an earlier one. ..

Thanks Richard I have something off that. I guess I need to go wild and start with ancestry dot com or similar.

I had a reader's ticket for the National Records Office at Kew for years .... I believe they have military records ... it used to be free but that was decades ago so who knows now.

K
Ps .....they seem to be called The National Archives now.

The National Archives at Kew are currently giving free online access to their digitized records, so now is a good time to get them. All you need to do is create an account to log in.

https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/news/digital-downloads/

Note that only a proportion of WW1 records exist but those that do contain a lot of information and are well worth researching. I have subscriptions to both Find My Past and Ancestry so let me know if you want me to look something up.
