Call me a cynic but could the EU decision to limit the Astra jab to under 65’s have anything to do with them being tardy in ordering and now facing a shortfall of the very same jab? Neat way of passing the buck me thinks?

I'm 67 in a couple of weeks and had my first AZ Oxford jab the day before yesterday. I'm just happy to get it and if the EU don't want it for their over 65's then that leaves more for those of us that do.

John .... as the issue in Europe is only that there's insufficient trial data in that age group (although it appears the jab is perfectly safe and effective via other evidence) .... by the time we're jabbed to the point of unloading surplus orders, that evidence will be there in bundles and our neighbours will have upgraded their advice.
K I hope so ,as there has been a suggestion that the Swiss rejection is more about their domestic Pharma business is close to producing its own vaccine. I do get a sense of political manoeuvring, in that if you discount one source of vaccine you can use limited supplies of the approved vaccine to justify late vaccination programme roll out. The UK trials about to start, regarding mixing different brand vaccines administered to an individual to increase effectiveness to counter new variants etc may prove important as it works for mixed vaccines with Ebola etc. regards

Vaccination Tip.
I am 73. SWMBO 70 mid April. " I "was offered chance to book for my vaccination last week. I booked the "latest" appointment I could get for yesterday 3 Feb.
Turned up and the service was beyond superb! In and out in a flash plus 15 min post jab waiting time.
Whilst being jabbed (Pfizer Biontec) I asked the vaccinator. "My wife is with me. She is 70 in 9 weeks. Do you have leftover jabs due to No Shows etc"
Response "Not always but sometimes and we hate to waste any doses. Leave your phone number and hang around outside until 7pm which is our last appointment. No guarantees though and I will let you know either way."
7.10 pm phone rang and in SWMBO went. Job Done! So we are now in sync.
As she left the vaccination booth, the vaccinator said to the other staff "Where is XXXname? Two seconds later the evening contract cleaner (middle aged lady ) was taken in and she was also jabbed using the last dose of the day.. No wastage and another person vaccinated.
Its just great to see the dedication, enthusiasm and practicality of my local vaccination centre
So,,, if you are out of sync with your other half, it may be something to think about when booking a slot. uplifting and heart warming story 👏

Neat way of passing the buck me thinks? definitely sour grapes in my view. It's part of the attempt to discredit UK's fast vaccine rollout. According to Macron, his health secretary and that genius Ursula, UK took many more "risks" in approving the AZ jab early. EU was being safer and more rigorous. These folks don't address the elephant in the room, as EMA has reached the same conclusion as the MHRA about AZ vaccine. UK vaccination data and ongoing analysis shows that AZ jab is proving effective in all age groups, but of course, this data can't be relied on, as we are taking on so much more "risks". Never mind that we have a world class reputation for science and scientific analysis and rigour. It would be funny if it wasn't so tragic. Older folks are the ones who need the protection offered by vaccines, so various EU countries have decided not to let those groups have the AZ vaccine. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

The media today is full of stories about the errors and plain stupidity within the higher echelons of the EC.
Im not returning to the EU bashing BREXIT posts of last year, it is simply so very sad to see a once impressive organisation in such a mess.
Will it recover from BREXIT and COVID?
I wish them well, but I wouldn't put money on the bet.

It takes a brave person to lead in these critical sochul medier led times. There are a lot more bows and arrows than there are people willing to give applause. But leadership is exactly what is needed.
With a little bit of time between when this mess started and now I think the Furlow program, Florence hospitals (even if we have not had to use them thank god) and other bets have been shown as good bets. The decision to actually act and get the orders in for the vaccines especially good.
I placed that bet on Starmer for the next prime minister as I still find Boris's manner unbecoming in many ways but I figure the team do need the applause for some of the big stuff they have delivered. I wonder what it would have been like if we had an objective and positive press in the UK, there is a fair amount to be thankful for which seems to get passed over.
I am still going to take the mickey mind you.
Just time to burn a little more petrol before dinner.
