Well, there's some design inspiration from MMC in it...the comfort spec seats are an optional extra

I wonder if the marketing people have a bit of a laugh when they discuss the extra price they will charge on a £185,00 basic spec car for a seat that is comfortable.

Are they tempted to charge extra for opening doors, round wheels....... the list must be endless

How many get lured in to fork out ££££££ for he bling?
Bling = bigger profits.
Extras? Another way to boost profits. Make a basic spec car then charge for extras, many of which you would think should be there anyway.
The heart often overtakes the head. Man maths makes it worse. Ego pushes it higher. Image even more.

that looks like a first step into hybrid across the range - by which I mean that it's an ICE car with just enough electricity to allow it to meet city CO2 regulations. The *really* interesting step will be the next generation, which you'd think will fully blend internal combustion & electric power.

Or do McLaren expect to be using this mix, with synthetic fuels, to get to a clean carbon footprint?
https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/porsche-begin-producing-synthetic-fuels-2022 "The general idea behind these synthetic fuels is that there is no change to the engine necessary, ... "we expect a reduction in the CO2 impact of around 85%"

I have never liked the logic of options. I do not mean that in the case of really specialist companies like Morgan where personalisation and hand build/assembly is a real part of it. The car industry went down that route with cars and loads of options. If you configure Porsche or Audi on the Interweb even the cars above £80k some of the things that really ought to be standard are still options. Some like Mini made a massive play around it. It drives personalisation and premium at the top end of the segment I guess. You can see the profit associated with it which is why they are in business at the end of the day.

If I spec a car that has 16" wheels they must cost the manufacturer (lets say) £50 a corner to buy. If I upgrade to 18" wheels they probably cost £65 a corner. But that is only £15 more per corner as they replace the £50 purchase. Yet the upgrade will be £1500 pounds. Okay so let's add another £15 per corner for the tyres that also need upgrading. Still does not touch the sides of the customers payment.

I notice that many of the new companies coming up don't offer this and have an almost single model approach. Tesla offers six colours and almost no options. Some of the new Chinese companies like Lucid are also following this track. It seems to make sense given the stock levels with three hundred thousand possible combinations become a nightmare.

This is the whole point, isn't it? With high-margin options you're not paying for the price of the components provided, you're paying for the complexity of the system required to be able to provide it. It's cheaper for Tesla et al to simply provide all the options as part of their standard package and avoid offering the ludicrous fripperies that others seem to delight in providing.

So why do manufacturers go with it, and why do we let them? Because 'Customer Choice' is one of the core axioms of modern capitalism. It is assumed a priori to be a Good Thing, and therefore clearly the more of it you have, the better.

This is so deeply engrained in our thinking that if anyone questions the principle, they are immediately treated like a crank - but unfortunately for the consumer, the assumed benefit frequently becomes a disbenefit as we are trapped into paying more for poorer quality goods.

Witness trying to buy breakfast in an American diner for a perfect example of this in extremis

I must be odd then. I try to find cars that have a minimum of, to me, unnecessary add-ons (e.g. stupidly large wheels with rubber bands for tyres, traction control &c.). smile

I try and find cars that some previous owner has ticked every option on the page at their expense and have now tumbled so the owner will see little of the additional cost back. In saying that I don't understand it I am always happy to take advantage of it.
