Years ago a rugby colleague rebuilt the exhaust on his car. Basically replacing rusted pipes with copper pipes. It certainly changed the note of it! They didn’t last that long though. I think Pagani used titanium in one of their cars and included a resonator to tune the note. It was also heat treated to give a purple colour. Pops and bangs are no substitute for a nice note. Another thing that makes me laugh are the dump valve whooshes that people create. OK for racing to help turbo effectiveness but on a road car? They make me think the car has asthma.

My Aero rumbles nicely on overrun when tickling along slowly in traffic, which I like. But I'm not a fan of pops and bangs though, it always feels like somethings going to go sometime soon.
My first +8 in 1979 had a straight through system, I remember drilling out the two silencer baffles and knocking them out. That made a big improvement in it's sound, with a good bark on the go and rumbles on overrun.

I am a 68 year old child who loves the pops and bangs that all our 3 cars produce! Yes , all my cars pop and bang and none of them are inefficient , sports exhausts are designed to do this , nothing to do with the engine being out of tune . If anyone has been to classiclemans the group c cars sound amazing , pops bangs and flames ! During a visit to the factory not long after I had the manifold/sports exhaust/CS tune done I asked if the pops and bangs could be eliminated. I also asked which "bit" was responsible for said noises. They informed me that it was definitely the CS remap that controlled the pops and bangs and they could be reduced with a (chargeable) tweak. Unfortunately that would result in a slight loss of power. Very helpful they were too.

For me, nothing stirs the soul like the wonderful burbling popping noises as I drive over the South Downs on a frosty morning.
You may say that's irrational but (in the words of Tom Stoppard) "- so is a nicely kept garden, or a lover's favour, or a home for stray dogs ... if rationality were the criterion for things being allowed to exist, the world would be one gigantic field of soya beans!"

Since I put the club sport tune on my plus 4 it pops and bangs much more. The teenager in me lovers it and often dileberately drive it to maximise the effect. It always makes me smile. That is .....very sensible of you Gary , exactly how I like it !

Its an aside but titanium turns a lovely pink on the surface just being heated. I remember us making the landing legs for TSR2 in the big drop stamp - they were titanium and were beautiful even before machined. The cancellation charges paid by the MoD were the only profit we made that year. Various bits of the fezza are titanium including the wheel bolts and con rods.
