These still look spot on compared to the fat replacements from VAG and the other followers on, and this colour was the best for me.

I couldn't afford one at the time with three youngsters but still love that shape and style, Heather's Polo GTI would see it off no problem but not the same sort of animal at all, the clean lines of these were sublime.
If I had a spare garage this would be in it..

Anyone else hankered after one of these ?

I had a us version of the Sirocco.for a while in the late 70's. It was a lot of fun after i put new bushings in the gearshift linkage.

I loved the MkI but it was out of my league as well.
My first new car was a MkII 16v which looked a bit bloaty compared to the sharp lines of the MkI but the 16v engine made up for it. You could buzz it for ever.

Just time to burn a little more petrol before dinner.

Personally, no, but I can appreciate why someone would. Built at a time when Volkswagen were a cut above most other brands in the engineering stakes.

The Vauxhall Chevette HS was the one for me and I still quite fancy one. If I were to buy a GTI it would be a MK1 though.

They drove/handled well and the 1600 engine was a lovely screamer....the RHD brakes were a real kludge capable of some seriously fearful moments...the MkII fixed a lot of things at the expense of weight that was overcome with the 16V version.

Even as a child I didn't like the angular coal box design ... Would definitely have preferred a used Volvo PV 544...

I was forgetting some of the quick Vauxhalls, they produced some nice one's too.

I had two of them, both cabrios and they are, and I suspect, still great. So small, well built and in the real world still quite fast.

Here for a good time not a long time!!

I was never mad keen on the normal Chevette as it seemed so heavy but the HS was a different thing with the lovely torque rich engine. I always thought the car that missed out on it's calling was the Firenza, 1973.

If we are looking at that era - I would have given a little bit of almost anything to have had a Sunbeam Lotus in the black/silver colours. Oh and a couple of spare sets of rear tyres to get me through the weekend.

1st Golf GTi is a classic, and a classically beautiful shape.
