I've just bought a spectacular Plus 8. It's being shipped right now from California to Michigan. The ONLY things I dislike are the 5mph bumpers with the concertina bellows behind. Are these removable? How difficult is it to do so? Any negatives (aside from parking garage bumps) in doing so?

Rex, they were fitted in N America to meet your rules. I suspect if you look underneath it is a simple spanner job to take them off.
The biggest risk is bending the metal work if they are missing but many Mogs go bare including Belle

If you remove them, aren't you in breach of the rules and therefore rendering your car unroadworthy and your insurance invalid?

A lot of them have been converted and there are very few of the propane one's around out there now so there's a way round these things.

Rex,
Welcome to the wacky world of Morgan ownership. I don,t know if you have mandatory state inspections in MI but here in VA we do. I took my 1970 +8 to one a few years ago and it was rejected for no front bumper, didn't meet safety standards as built. So i put it back on and passed the inspection. Mine is the original chrome one, yours i believe is off a VW golf if memory is correct.

We don't have mandatory inspection in Michigan. I'm going to wait until the car arrives (another 7 days or so) and see what's there and what the options are. I may well opt to re-site the front bumper underneath like classics outside US or add overriders. The rear is the bigger challenge though.

Not here in Michigan. But I remain concerned about having no bump protection at all, should I remove them completely. Decisions, decisions.

As discussed on The Morgan Experience forum the full detail of how to remove the bumpers and what to do with the bodywork afterwards were given.
