Toady we did an out & back run to Clumber Park. It's a large park. The original stately home was demolished a long time ago. A long road passes through it with an avenue of trees, and it's popular for parking up and walking, and for dog walkers. Probably about two miles long..

To visit the lake, church and facilities means driving down a side road and through a pay gate. So far so good.

We drove through the park, turned around and pulled up at the side of the road to grab the flask. I left the engine running because it was 3c. Within a minute, an old guy rolls up with a clipboard. Asks us if we are NT members. I explain that we're not because we don't visit often. (And we don't do the stately home NT thing). He then asks us for £10 "Admission" A fiver each, even though we're parked at the side of a public road.

The question is......has the NT taken leave of its senses, or was he a con man? Obviously we left and he got nothing.

Interesting, but no sign of any signs..............and the parking spots we used is tarmac away from trees, so it doesn't make any sense, plus if you're a member it's OK to park for free.

They put up a lot of stakes on the main avenue to stop parking which I get completely.......but it's basically a money making scam.

On the plus side, you left quickly.
We won’t go to Clumber Park in the Morgan since some idiot was kicking a football near the car without the skill to make sure the car was missed. Fortunately np harm done on that occasion.

Sadly Rich, it looks like it IS possible for the NT to have too many trees..... frown

There is an excellent NT property near to us, Kingston Lacy https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/kingston-lacy. "Pre-pandemic" we just dropped by, all seasons, walking / coffee shop / picnics 'neath the spreading beech trees / classic car rallies. Beautiful snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells coming soon. All good stuff, and justified our cost of membership.

The NT also has control over [aka there's now a charge to park] nearby Badbury Rings see https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/kingston-lacy/features/badbury-rings (Not sure how that happened, as it is an ancient hill fort), and also the amazing avenue of beeches leading there from Kingston Lacy. See http://elements.uk.com/wordpress/2017/10/22/beech-avenue-at-badbury-rings/ (great driving road btw blush).

You can sense a BUT -- the BUT is that "some of the trees have had to be felled for safety reasons". A few years ago I saw the tree surgeons in action and wept quietly. Their action defied all known logic and was much criticised by locals, other national bodies, and Chris Packham et al as I recall.

Thanks for that Peter, as you say it does seem the NT can have too many of the wrong sort of trees.
That is a wonderful looking avenue we'll be sure to seek that out when we are in Dorset, that car park charging does seem a rip off to visit the Bradbury Rings though.

Our nearest is Coleton Fishacre which is a good visit and a nice walk down to the sea at Kingswear, we are not members but I was a bit peeved at having to cough up £3 for parking on top of our entrance fees and this was about 5 years ago now.
The family use to race Bentleys back in the day and the Seafood lunch is really top quality fresh locally supplied if anyone does pay it a visit.

Looks like it happens quite often - it appears the trees live for 150-200 years and then die, so have to be felled.
