The Revival for me this year started early and wasn't without some excitement beforeI I'd even arrived, travelling around the M25 on Thursday morning all was going well until traffic started to slow on the approach to the junction for the A3, after a considerable delay the issue revealed itself as a broken down Swallow Doretti on the slip road.

The poor chap was in real distress, he couldn't push the car up the slip road on his own and everyone was just driving around him, nobody was stopping help and it was all very unsafe for both the driver and the rare little Swallow, so I pulled in to lend a hand. Together we pushed the car to the side of the slip road and I had a look, the owner told me the TR3 engine had just faded away rather than suffered a hard cut out so armed with this info and knowing these old Triumph engines well I felt the SU float chambers, sure enough they were hot as hell.

Ethanol in modern fuel vaporises at very low temps so all old pre-crossflow engine designs tend to suffer fuel starvation when the petrol gets heated by the adjacent exhaust manifold and boils in the float chambers, I soon had a water soaked rag in hand and used it as a cold compress to pull the heat out, but all attempts to start the engine failed. I moved to the distributor and popped the cap to look at the points, all this time I'm acutely aware we're still in a very unsafe place and Monty was very vulnerable too, however as I removed the cap I noticed the distributor body move.

The distributor was very loose indeed, but all the owner had in the way of tools was a screwdriver so I swung the distributor as far as it would go in the anticlockwise direction and gapped the points by eye, with the cap back on the old Triumph engine burst into life. After telling the driver to get his distributor clamp tightened as soon as he got to Goodwood and to swing it anticlockwise as far as it would go if the engine died again on the way there, we were both safely on our way. I stayed with the Swallow for a few miles down the A3 to make sure he was OK and he proved all was well by passing me at a healthy 70mph, so I let him go.

Being honest I was in two minds to stop or not as the situation was very dangerous indeed, but nobody else was helping so someone had to rescue the poor guy.

I just hope he had as good a Revival as I did? thumbs

Looking back it was very risky to stop, everyone was weaving past the Swallow and beeping eachother (and probably us), I felt very vulnerable as I worked as fast as I could to get the engine running again.

But for sure the Swallow driver would have felt worse sat there stranded, nobody was helping him which must have been horrible, however, the right thing to do would have been to abandon the car and get in a safe place while waiting for a professional rescue.

I got away with it this time but I do not recommend stopping on a motorway or even a slip road off a motorway, while my instincts were to help the diver and save his lovely classic, on reflection my actions were rather reckless frown

Scary business!

The Goodwood team really looked after us again, the Revival is definitely still the worlds best motoring event cloud9

I remember some years back 3 guys in a van stopped on the A406 just prior to Charlie Browns roundabout to push a broken down car with a lady driver in it out of the carriageway, all 4 were killed when a HGV ploughed into them. Best to phone police for a fend off.

I am sure he did - that was an incredibly kind thing to do.
