MOT due at the end of the month so have booked my car in for its test at Foster & Heanes in Dogmersfield as they can carry out an MOT class 4 test on three wheelers. Known issues with my car included one melted front indicator and one side light bulb not illuminated. Having changed one front indicator already and having that melt again lead me to install a pair of these smaller motorcylce indicators. Billet aluminium and the LEDs light up orange. The brighness is similar looking to the factory lamps. Ideally I would have preferred them to be of larger diameter but they are what they are. I also have some smoked lenses as an option.

Fiddly to connect to the existing wires in the loom to the new ones but doable with patience. Cannot revert to the standard indicators now as I cut off the stalks the original indicators mounted to! But I also do have side lights/indicators on my mudguards as another mod (by previous owner) so am hoping the combination of a pair of indicators per side will allow me to pass the MOT test in that regard.

The side light bulb on my drivers side head lamp was not working and changing the bulb did not fix it! A bit more investigating required but no time to do so before the MOT now so I am relying on my mudguard sidelamps to count as sidelights. To this end I disconnected the other sidelight in the passenger headlamp so it looks deliberate that the sidelights are meant to be on the mudguard.

Better minds than mine will know how allowable these mods and fudges are, guess I find out tomorrow afternoon!

And yes that is my wonderful daughter trying to hide in the passenger footwell!

Can’t see that there will be any MoT problems with those mods.

Hi Malcolm, not an expert but the indicators look ok. Apparently many cars don't have sidelights anymore so either get both working, or none at all? The headlights on my M3W don't conform so I just but a bin bag over them at MOT time, no problem!

I think the general rule of thumb is, if it's there, it should work.

I did think for a while simply not to have any indicators under the headlights and rely solely on the mudguard mounted ones. Once I have passed this MOT (note my optimisim!!!!!) I will ask the examiner what could I have got away with. Generelly I would agree with the if its there it should be working principle. And glad my MOT is this week and not next as the weather looks about to get decidedly colder!

Passed!

But an interesting discussion with the tester followed. When asked if my mudguard lights were acceptable for indicators and sidelights without the factory fit ones, the tester said that he was relying only on the mudguard lights for indicators as he could not see the factory position indicators when the car was veiwed from the side. Now maybe that is because I have aftermarket indicators down there but I showed him the factory items in a picture and he still preferred the mudguard indicator position. Clearly a grey area in interpreting the MOT rule book. He was perfectly happy with them as the only sidelights on the car. I don't think they test many M3Ws at this garage so probably why they were unfamiliar with the factory items and positioning.

I generally find MOT testers have their own way to interpret the MOT rule book and it is still possible for one tester to fail a car but another to pass it. I have a GTD40 which I registered in 1992 as a new self built car. MOTs on that can be interesting as emissions testing was only coming in about then and self built cars of that year are exempt but it is always a discussion to ensure that rule is applied. A 650 double pumper holley carb on a 302 SB has no chance of passing any emissions test! Also side repeater indicators became a requirement about then as well if I recall correctly so must say i am surprised that Morgan did not fit them on my 2012 car. Maybe low volume rules applied?

Anyway MOT passed for another year, next decision is whether to SORN it now or to keep it live and ready for any sunny play day over winter that comes along. It was nice going for a 20 mile round trip to the MOT and back!

No such thing as bad weather - just inadequate clothing - winter day runs in an M3W are exhilarating...just avoid ice and snow!
