Thanks for the suggestions - I haven't been able to attend to the car until today, replaced the fuel pump , just as a first potential item (and now I have a spare) and still cutting out - I'm going to go with the theory that it's a fuel line blockage for now but I'll also replace the capacitor - the coil is new and I removed the ballast resistor when I first got the car. I cleaned out the fuel tank about 6 months ago and I can only imagine that there must have been a lot of crud in the lines too and I should have attended to them at the same time.

I don't think it's fuel in the water just because I keep the car garaged, there's been no rain in 6 months and I use the same fuel in my regular cars - but definitely something I'll take into consideration.

My winter project was to attend to the wiring but I think it'll be fuel lines for now. I'll review previous posts for recommended fuel lines - thanks - all your help keeps me motivated.

If you're still running with a traditional ignition system, it's usually the condenser giving random faults

Given Rob's findings so far and no mention of a hiss when removing fuel cap I'm favouring ignition as the problem. Condenser or coil maybe, the latter being excessively hot, causing missfire then no spark would be a giveaway.

Wouldn't hurt to sling a 16oz can of Sea Foam in to a full tank of fuel - a great piece of American liquid engineering which helps to clean and lubricate all parts of the fuel system and top end of the engine. I use this regularly in old motorcycles with carbs and it does a wonderful job. For those interested it can be used carbs, fuel injection, petrol and diesel. You can also get an aerosol version which you spray directly in to the air inlet of the carb/injection system for intensive cleaning whilst the engine is running (don't worry about the clouds of white smoke from the exhaust - this is normal and will clear) and you'll be amazed as the quieter and smoother running of the engine afterwards. The can of Sea Foam in the fuel tank every few thousand miles is as an ongoing maintenance treatment. Brilliant stuff and like everything else is available on Amazon.

Cheers, Paul

PJC - Sounds like an amazing suggestion , I'll definitely give that a shot.
Richard, I changed the condenser and I'm going to take it for a test drive this weekend - as the likelihood of breaking down is high, I tend to need to put myself in a positive state of mind before heading out, that's why my updates are so infrequent.

I did blow air through the fuel line and I didn't see anything but petrol come out (I realize ,in hindsight, I should have put some kind of coffee filter in front to catch any sediment).

Coil is the next thing to try - after that, I'll drain the fuel tank to see if there's any water contamination. It's all good learning .

We had running issues for a number of years. Finally figured out that the low voltage connections on the coil were crimp connections that didn't always make a good connection. I happened to catch a spark out of the corner of my eye one day. I soldered all of them, and the car has been running great ever since.

Just in case this will be of some use to somebody one day, I replaced the condenser and that seemed to do the trick - no conking out since. It's consistently mis-firing at around 3000 rpm, but haven't got round to figuring out why yet. Thanks for the suggestions and help - always helps to keep my momentum going - so to speak. PaulyG, I'll take a look at the connections, just in case they could have been a contributing factor.

Could it be a plug breaking down ? I have had that.
