IF they drop the 5p cut and IF they stop freezing fuel duty as they have for the last 10 years and IF they apply RPI inflation to the duty level then yes, it's going to go up by 23% or 12p/litre.
Will it? Depends how deep in the dermot we are in 6 months time. My guess is not.

it's good politics in the spring to be able to say they'rethe good guys by not putting it up by the full amount... even they're the bad guys that set out the worst possible case today I used to work for a company like that, Chairman gave everyone a 20% pay cut across the board. After many complaints / resignations a week later he backed down a bit and changed it to a 10% cut. He thought he was being generous as he had given everyone a 10% pay rise & was a bit upset that staff were not thanking him.

I'm delighted to see that EVs and the older Zero duty cars will have to pay the basic car tax. I smell a faint whiff of the Nett Zero policy starting to burn. It is and always was, unaffordable.

The problem I suppose is that if taxation is used to drive behaviour, then when the behaviour changes the lost tax has to be collected somewhere

I'm delighted to see that EVs and the older Zero duty cars will have to pay the basic car tax. When I first read that I thought you meant they were scrapping the Historic Vehicle tax-exemption!! 😮 .... but from what I can see it's just older EVs that will be effected ... phew! K

When the volume of BEV's getting additional discount reaches a significiant volume then they also feel the pinch at the IR. If 1% of cars are benefiting it is a rounding error. When 10-30% of cars sold are BEV then it is more than a rounding error and someone starts to look at the column or row that is burping! I guess we are above the rounding error now for certain.
