Currently at home with a broken leg enjoying the view from my window. Those two blurred square objects on the horizon are an oil platform which wouldn’t normally be visible from here, it’s too far away.
Here’s an article about the optical phenomenon “Fata Morgana”

https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a32389233/optical-illuson-fata-morgana-ufo-flying-ship/

And here’s the real deal:

Just remembered I saw a ship of that name once while in Malta on holiday.

I remember seeing the phenomenon when supertankers were headed to Milford Haven. They were visible from Pembrey Mountain as they passed between Lundy and the mainland. Under the right light they appeared to float as if in mid air. Lundy was also visible when conditions were clear. Same for the North beach at Tenby across Carmarthen Bay. You could make out the brightly coloured buildings above the beach/harbour.

It was quite a regular phenomenon when I was at sea. We called it super-refraction. Always found it fascinating. Thanks.

I’m glad to have re-kindled an interest in the phenomenon. As you say, it’s not uncommon but the opportunity to photograph it is. I cheated a wee bit here, I took it with my phone but through one lens of my binoculars while sitting nice and still in my easy chair laugh2 not too bad considering it’s also through my dirty window!

The oilfield by the way is the “ Buzzard “, it’s 55km northeast of my comfy seat.
