Hello everyone. Just before Christmas I took delivery of a MY 17 M3W from Krazy Horse. I'm based in North Wales and have placed the car on SORN until the weather improves ( that's right, I haven't even driven it yet!) so in the meantime I'm planning on carrying out some modifications to personalise the car. I'm not long retired from nursing and have been a motorcyclist for a number of years.

I've already pretty much read every thread in the M3W section and have found all the information enlightening and interesting. One thing though, a lot of the links which people have posted directing you to available parts have now expired which brings me on to some questions.

1. Is it still possible to get an S&S air filter adaptor to enable fitment of different air filter covers in the UK?
2. I'm considering installing stage 1 pipes - is this considered an essential modification to dissipate heat?
3. I have the heritage screen fitted and can see two gaps in the screen at the bottom of the centre alloy stem - what is their function?
4. Should I leave the quick release steering wheel retaining bolt in place which removes the quick release function?
5. Can the front wheels be removed without removing the mudguards?
6. Where can I get longer seatbelt stems?

To answer some of your questions:

Possibly, try Nobby (Spare manager) at Krazy Horse or see if Craig at M3WServices can help


2. I'm considering installing stage 1 pipes - is this considered an essential modification to dissipate heat?
Freer flowing exhaust pipes are probably the single best modification for your car. They will dissipate heat and make the engine run better and smoother. The Krazy Horse Stage 1 pipes are popular and I really like mine. Alternately Garage 56 pipes are maybe a little quieter but are much larger.

3. I have the heritage screen fitted and can see two gaps in the screen at the bottom of the centre alloy stem - what is their function?
I don't know about the Heritage screen but am sure someone will be along with an answer soon

4. Should I leave the quick release steering wheel retaining bolt in place which removes the quick release function?
YES YES YES. You will have the Traven quick release and there have been a few instances of the wheel not locating properly.

5. Can the front wheels be removed without removing the mudguards?
Yes, if the clearance is tight just let the tyres down first.

6. Where can I get longer seatbelt stems?
I got mine off eBay. Remember you need one with a 21mm Wide Tongue which is the smaller of the 2 standard sizes.

For #2, I just love my G56 pipes. The sound they make is delightful and mellifluous , and the change they make to the way the engine revs is astonishing. Instead if being strangled close to redline, the engine feels eager.

A "Bafflectomy" will give you the same results as Stage 1 and G56 pipes saving you a fortune to spend on other goodies for your new baby.

Whilst a "bafflectomy" is cheaper and does give the performance and drivability benefits it is noisier and in some cases has proved to be only marginally in range of the adaptation provided by the stock ECU leading to check engine lights appearing.

Thank you folks for taking the time to reply with really useful information. I'll keep the steering in situe given the risks of incorrect attachment and the unthinkable consequences! I have often fitted aftermarket pipes to bikes over the years but this has been for the benefit of aural gain - by the sounds of it, there are real mechanical benefits for adding stage 1 pipes to the M3W so I'll go ahead and get a set. Is home fitment straight forward?

On a separate note, the previous owner had vinyl decals of his company logo added to the car - whilst I think they look quite nice, I'm not sure about driving a vehicle which advertises alcohol and am considering changing them for something more mainstream - what do people think?

If your looking to change the exhausts just ask whoever os selling you them if they are legal from a noise perspective. They are increasing clamping down on noise and while I have run the Morgan factory stage one pipes for a good few years they are loud and I now swap them back to standard when I tour in Europe as I have heard of people getting stopped. The Stage 1 pipes I have don't have a conformance label on so Im not sure where I would stand officially. That said welcome to the club and have lots of fun. Will keep an eye open for you in North Wales as I tour up there a lot. Best wishes

Hi Ginmoggie, I can't add anything to the above comments, I too was considering an exhaust upgrade, probably a bafflectomy but considering the low mileage the car does I've left well alone, if you do an exhaust upgrade modify the air filter too. Personally I would remove the gin decals but the rest of the car is lovely. I'm a Denbigh lad and haven't moved more than 10 miles away so must meet up when our cars get back on the road, finally if your car is on SORN don't forget to drain the oil either in storage or before starting the engine, don't ask me how I know!
