Hi,
my 1981 4/4 original speedometer remains dark when I turn on the lights. Probably the bulb fused.
Does anyone know if it is possible to change the bulb without removing the instrument from the dashboard?
Thanks
Bert

Can you get on your back with a powerful torch and check if you can see Speedo housing from under dash? If so a good chance you can pull out the push in bulb holder and replace bulb.

If RichardV6's suggestion doesn't work, then why not take out the dashboard ? Not a horrible job (mind you, mine is a later car so may differ), and a one-person job. It helps to remove the steering wheel, then after removing the screws that hold the dash in place, the dash can be lowered enough to see behind. Use the opportunity to vacuum-out the bugs and tidy-up the wiring if needed. Disconnect the battery first if you don't want to risk knowing what burning ash smells like.

Sit in the drivers seat lean forward and put your hand up under the dashboard, if you can reach behind the speedometer then you should be able to pull out the the bulb holder. If you can't get to the back of the speedometer then you know you have to take the dash off.

As said reach behind the dash. The dash doesn't need to come off if that doesn't work.,you will two knurled nuts that hold the speedo to the dash by a u frame. Undo them and it should push forward.
I always managed by the hand round the back routine.
