I lived in Hungary in 1985 & 1986 and spent 20 months based in Budapest leading an Industrial Project at a number of sites across the country. Had the +8 with me and this was recorded in Miscellany and the local motoring press. Would often pass the Russian troops on manoeuvres, long columns of vehicles many broken down. There were very few foreigners working in the country at the time and few restaurants, but all had gypsy bands. By the third month when I ate out with colleagues we would pay them not to play.

How I can relate to that ! I made regular business trips to Hungary during that era. Winters were worst, with a lot of pollution in Budapest at that time. Needing places to eat in the evening, I would trudge out in the snow, the restaurants had double-layered (mainly maroon) heavyweight curtains at the entrance to keep out the cold. The lack of tourists meant that the bands in most of the restaurants pounced on any foreigners who might just cough-up a few Forints. "Death by Gypsy violin" was a bad way to go. That was the era of exchange declarations on entering and leaving the country, and woe betide anyone who "lost" a few £ or $ as incentives. I loved the country though, mostly shuttling back and forth from Budapest to Vác and Győr, and a few summertime excursions to Lake Balaton. I was fortunate that my employer put me in nice hotels (either the Hilton or the Intercontinental), one of them was the first place I'd seen an all-glass atrium lift.
