Reminds me of an article in the Telegraph from last month. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion...tique-fair.htmlI know its not PC but when you have the doors flung wide open---you have to expect some of the dross to turn up take advantage to try and empty the place---no doubt they have been massively disadvantaged in their earlier miserable lives. Best I end here as I am warming to the subject.

VHF goes through containers, I can assure you!
Any radio transmitter and aerial in a metal box will have it's range reduced dramatically. Hard to put a figure on it but I suspect what might go for 15 miles or more in open country might be struggling to go much more than 15 yards outside a metal box. So yes, VHF does go through a container, but at such reduced strength, unless you are in the same yard, you'd be lucky to find it.

Yes but it's not miles. Much over a few hundred yards and the signal will be sufficiently weak to vanish into the background noise. Put that container into a higher rf noise environment and you might not even find it at 15 yards. Simple physics, which encompasses radio theory. Sorry, near 40 years in radio - both professional and hobby... Have to say, finding that JCB was a lucky shot! Good one! Simon: now that's a real classic 911 Cheers,

My figure of 15 yards was assuming a typically radio noisy urban environment. Should one find a low radio noise location the effective range will increase dramatically. 150 yards - yes I believe you, although I think you were lucky with either the location or the time you looked/listened.
Graham I think knows, but I am actually a UK radio amateur (G8UCP) and after university (BSc in Electrical Engineering) , spent 8 years fixing BBC radio and tv transmitters, followed by many more years answering and advising on all broadcast reception topics.
