Hi All

I have a 3 owner 1978 4/4 in red. Although I have owned the car since 1980,I was 18 at the time (lucky Boy)! Bought from Morris Stapleton at Reece Mews in central london for the princley sum of £6000. I could have had for a near new white one(£6250) but once I saw the red there was no choice, much against my fathers advice. Over the years I added Folding screen and aero screens, 3 eared spinners, Motolita rivoted wood rim wheel and a roll bar. I enjoyed my Moggy time and entered several concourses a difficult task as a daily driver.

It was my only transport for 7 years in which I covered 56k miles, I used to make regular pilgrimages to Rob Wells of Libra Motive in North London for services. Untill I bought a LHD Porsche 924 Carrera GT, a very special car, as I was doing alot more Motorway miles so the Moggy took a back seat for many years and despite my Wife's oft expressed opinion I always kept her and the Moggy !

But 32 years later I still think I made the right choice. I have flurted with many classics over the years even imported about 40 classics mainly Porsche from the US in the eighties. But I always came back to the Moggy, and with little effort it always started.

So the world has turned full circle and my Son is 18 this month and much to by incredulity it is cheaper to insure him in the moggy than anything Modern! So it will be a rush to prepare the car for the end of the month, I really fancy doing a 4/4 Sport with track day pack as it already has a Roll Bar and 3 eared spinners.

Does anyone know what the deal is with the Ali lower valance on the new plus 4 sport, where can they be obtained ?

I have also enlarged and dont really fit in the bucket seats, I see there is a bench seat avalable, does anyone have any experience of these ?I am 6' but the Lad is 6'1" is this an issue.

Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

David Foster

I'm sorry I can't help with your specific questions but I just wanted to say how nice it is to read of your Morgan experience! Congratulations to your son on his upcoming birthday and what a nice way to celebrate a special birthday and his "coming of age" with him taking his place at the wheel of your cherished Morgan. You and he will feel very proud I'm sure.

Welcome to TM and there will be people along with answers to your questions I'm sure.

Regards,

John

Welcome to the forum Dentman.
I bought my first Morgan, a +4 1959 and had it for 28 years love. This january I changed it for a 2004 Roadster at Harpers. The reason was mainly that I intended to spend more time in the car than under it waiting. And as I am no Einstein in technical stuff I did not dare to take tha car, and my wife, for continental trips. It would surely make it, BUT if something would happen I would feel very lonely.
Hope you find the forum interesting.

Welcome to the forum.

Where in Surrey do you live. I grew up in Godalming

I will now delete you posting, I do not want my son (16) to see it, and ask to drive the Morgan just yet.

A welcome from me too, that is a great story.

I had the same thought as Steve, my son turns 17 in June and I don't want him getting the slightest inkling that he might be able to drive the Morgan.

Welcome to Talk Morgan, David.

I enjoyed your story and as has been said, your son is in for a real treat!

As for the lower valance, as has been said, it is unique to the 60 Plus 4 SuperSports; however, there is a chance it could be bought as a stand alone part via Morgan's Aero Racing Division. I'd suggest giving them a call.

If you want a different look altogether, DaveW and Robbie have fitted other types of lower grill/lower lip spoiler treatments. In Robbie's case an extension to the cowl and grill; in Dave's a modified lower spoiler from another British sports car. With some luck Robbie will post a link up to his thread on the topic (or you could search it - make sure to set the search criteria to 3-years). I'll post up Dave's link as I know where it is: Dave's lower spoiler adventure.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi David, and thanks for sharing an interesting story.

I too bought a 4/4 Sport for my son when he turns 17 (he is now 13) and meantime have loaned it to my Father who is enjoying a second childhood in it as he approaches 80. I suspect it might be difficult to prize him out of it when the lad turns 17. Mind you, the low insurance rates for young drivers in a 'Modern Classic' may well have disappeared by then...

On the subject of the +4 SS lower valance, you may find someone who can fabricate one. Fourways Engineering in Borough Green, Kent, specialise in bespoke aluminium panel fabrication - and they are conveniently located opposite Brands Hatch Morgan - who have a +4 SS to take a pattern from! I have no connection with Fourways other than they made me an aluminium bonnet for another car some years ago, the total cost of which was less than the factory steel part I bought to take a pattern from and steal the hinges & frame etc. Superb workmanship.
