Ahh, yes - Technology, the Green Eyed Monster



Yup, the Blog is looking good...
I think John+4 is joining up for part of S. Coast. I'm sure Frank would appreciate anyone joining in for a bit - particularly with local knowledge...

Unfortunately TomTom have changed their operating system and with thier latest products you can now no longer upload an itinerary from a computer or put in more than 4 waypoints. How stupid can they get that they have omitted such important features.

As you may have read in the blog, my Tom Tom developed two excellent new features.

1. Stopped working just when I needed it. on-off-on all day.

2. Adjustable Plinth sheared due to constant vibration. Taped it up and it fell off again

3. Result. -- I have had the best two days driving following road signs and the well signposted 'Coast Route North.' I have been on the coast road all the way.

So no Sat Nav on this trip from now on and I have already passed two Halfords branches.

Re the product reliability, the Chinese High Level Brake Lamp parted into three piece today so is taped up until the next time.

Onwards and Upwards--->

One of our Tomtoms is a french one which we've set to speaking english, although it doesn't have any English voices downloaded onto it. It therefore gives directions in a synthetic french voice that's trying it's best to speak English with hilarious results. It certainly provides much amusement on a boring trip. A previous Tomtom caught fire between Birmingham & Manchester which we thought a less pleasing feature.

Really enjoying the blog Frank. Keep up the good work. Sounds like you're making excellent progress & having a really interesting trip.

Didn't know that Peter. I've not tried my Mio Navman to see how many waypoints it can take. Most journeys where I use it are to find the final destination, to get me back to a road I know, or for potential traffic/roadworks etc. notifications. Garmin were good for setting up one's own routes, but the only recent one I tried was defective, so never got to test much in the way of it's facilities.

Frank, stick to the maps/charts - my preferred nav method! Blog is looking great.

Giles, I can just imagine a TomTom with a mix of Peter Sellers bumbling Detective and the Policeman from 'allo 'allo giving directions...

Ever since I was a young boy and I would look through my Dad's AA road atlas, I have had a desire to travel on those roads. In those days a lot of the roads were single track.

Maybe, some day.
