Hi

I am now a month into Morgan ownership with approx 1200 miles done in the car with no probs.

Morgan 4/4 1997
1800 Ford Zetec

Today I was cruising along at 50MPH and the engine just stopped, no horrible smoke or mechnical noise. I managed to coast into a layby and called for the recovery service!!.

The car turns over fine but will not start. I have checked all the fuses under the dash and all are OK.

I am suspecting a fuel pump problem as I cannot hear the pump priming when I turn the ignition on.

Can you tell me where the fuel pump is sited ??. Also on the forum I have seen reference to fuel pump relays and engine fuses.

Can you help with any ideas and info on the above.

Any help greatley appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Dear Chris

Glad you are enjoying your Morgan, but sorry you have a problem.

Sudden relay failure is common and you will find either 2 or 3 under the bonnet on the nearside of the car, on the bulkhead area.

I cannot tell you which one it is, but it is worth buying two, replacing them one by one, and then having one as a spare.

It is important to ensure that you get the correct ones for a Morgan, with a diode fitted, to ensure that your battery does not go flat.

Keith at Brands Hatch Morgans will tell you the correct one.

I hope this works

With very best wishes

Michael

Agree- and get yourself some reputable replacements - such as Bosch. As as has been said, if you stand at the passenger side of the bonnet, lift it up and then tracjk back twoards the Bulkhead, you'll see them. As a further guide, if you can find the engine red button restart, you're not far away

Has the car been chipped? I remeber reading when I had a Zetec 4/4 that the chip can become dislodged.
My 4/4 did what yours did but always then restarted.

The fuel pump is under the cover behind the seats, remove the carpet & open the lid.

This might help

Thanks everyone

Problem fixed - one of the relays is dead, car running fine with a temp replacement. Ordered two as you suggest. (with diode).

Out of interest my fuel pump is in the back on the slanting (45') bit of the tank.

There is something on the top of the tank - not sure what thats for - any one know??

Thanks for your quick and accurate responses/solutions.

I'm on a very steep Morgan learning curve.

Cheers

Chris

Chris my Zetec cut out just as you decribe, as if ignition had been turned off. My local garage found it was a failed fuel pump relay, as others have already suggested.
Original BOSCH relay is 0332 014 112.

Looking through the docs I have with the car it has had two previous sets of relays before. So with this new set that makes three new relays.

Given the comments from others that they have had dead relays - has anyone any idea why the relays are not reliable. They are Bosch relays and fitted to many cars with no problams.

Are they subjected to more moisture or vibration in a Mog ???

What do folks think. If we knew why they do not last I'm sure a resolution to the problem could be devised.

Has anyone tested the "failed" relays out of the car to see if they work ex-vehiculo?

Has anyone opened up a "failed" relay to see what failed?

It may be that there is trouble with the sockets. Has anyone inspected the plugs/sockets for a "failed" relay for signs of high resistance heating or other deformation?

Might get a clue that way

The top of the fuel gauge sending unit is on the top of the tank. It should have two wires coming out of it.

Having had a cooling fan motor relay fail a few years ago, I have now decided to carry a spare.
Apparently the three under-bonnet relays on my 1.8 Zetec (Black top) are all the same part number.
Wrapped in foam, the spare fits very neatly next to the spare bulb kit in the tool tray.
