Today I got around to one of “those” jobs in that my wiper motor did not park when turned off, it just stopped. It’s a two speed wiper motor and I noticed that not always did it step-up in speed when the switch was full depressed.

Firstly I cleaned the switch (stripped right down) and there was a lot of oxide in there. Operation of the switch feels OK.

Then I turned my attention to the wiper motor itself. I dismantled this and was able to check the park switch – all OK. However I noticed on of the brushes was damaged.

I reassembled and tested. Initially great news at “low” speed all OK and the wiper parks. Success; something I had done had fixed it….

…However when I go to high speed the fuse blows. I noticed a 20A use was fitted (manual that I recently purchased for the car – ’76 4/4) says it should be fitted with a 35A fuse. I changed the fuse to a 25A one (that I had to hand) and whilst it does not blow nothing happens when the switch is set to full speed (the ammeter drops right down to -50A, briefly before returning to zero).

I think the fuse is a “red herring” and that it probably the damaged brush(es). Any other thoughts?

Anybody know where I could source some brushes? MR does not have then listed….

Hardly ever - and not when I will be driving (I can sacriice those couple of hours ) that said I like things to work and enjoy my tinkering.....

Probably a Land Rover wiper motor, usually replaced when u/s, my Defender motor packed up at 110,000 miles and wasn't expensive to replace. Britpart are the big LR parts stockist, their www would be worth a try

Thanks - but sadly not - it did give me an idea though...

...I found a plate with the brushes (single speed). This changed my Google search and I turned up this website and hit the jackpot (so to speak). They stock all the servicable parts: Click Here.... and have the two speed brushes with the plate. Seems reasonable price too.
