http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/swedens-bankrupt-saab-finds-buyer-063726316.html

A buyer for bankrupt Swedish automaker Saab has been found, the adminstrators said Wednesday, without naming the company involved.

The administrators said they would hold a press conference at 1100 GGMT at Saab headquarters in Trollhatten, southern Sweden, to disclose details of the deal.

Earlier this month, a group of Chinese and Japanese investors said they submitted an offer for Saab in April, before the deadline for bids expired.

National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB (NEVS), a Swedish-registered company founded by a Hong Kong-based company specialising in alternative energy and a Japanese investment fund, declined to disclose the amount of the offer.

Chinese carmaker Youngman was also known to be interested in buying Saab.

Swedish media have reported that Youngman placed a preliminary bid in late January or early February of about two billion kronor (220 million euros, $280 million).

Youngman has long been interested in Saab and tried to snap it up before it declared bankruptcy but those efforts were thwarted by the Saab's former owner, General Motors (NYSE: GM - news) , which balked at transferring the necessary technology licences.

Reports have also surfaced that Indian commercial utility vehicles manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra has placed a bid as well.

Saab was on the brink of bankruptcy when GM sold it in early 2010 to Dutch company Swedish Automobile (SWAN) -- at the time called Spyker -- for $400 million.

Bankruptcy administrators said in April that Saab had assets to cover only just over a third of its debt of 13 billion kronor.

There was a suggestion that the NEVS bid was the one that had secured Saab and that they were intending to move the company toward electric vehicles. It will be interesting to see how this story unfolds.

Here's hoping it works out this time - I've been a Saab fan for many years, I'd hate to see the marque vanish altogether...

Interesting news. It would be so nice to see someone with the company who would return it to being a manufacturer of 'slightly unique in the face of similarity' vehicles. I'd a couple of 99's and a 900 Turbo at various times. They were interesting and practical cars with always an unusual flair. I'm sure I saw the wee silver 99 2 door recently in the town. A gem and a survivor! I wish Saab the very best in whatever guise but hope for a semi-return to past glories.

It all went down, when new Saabs became nothing more than badge-engineered Opels. I'm not a fan of chinese takeovers, but for Volvo it seems to have worked...

Having owned two Saabs (more recent models) they always were a interesting alternative to the "more common" marques. Like with Morgan's they have (had) a following that was enthusiastic and helpful. I hope they are a phoenix.

NEVS is expected to launch a production version of the Saab 9-3 ePower, which was unveiled nearly two years ago

Saab has been bought out of receivership by a Japanese-Chinese conglomerate which says it will use the revived carmaker to specialise in building electric vehicles.

The newly-formed National Electric Vehicle Sweden says the first new Saab model will be a battery-powered version of the current 9-3, which is due to roll off the revived Trollhattan production lines at the end of 2013.

NEVS bosses say that the Saab will combine Swedish expertise in manufacturing and design with Japanese EV technology and aims primarily to supply EVs to the burgeoning Chinese market.

NEVS also says it is in negotiations with Scania and the defence and security company Saab over the use of the name and the badge.

At a press conference today, NEVS said it had bought the rights to the current 9-3 and the new Phoenix platform that was under development when Saab folded last year. It does not have the rights to build the 9-5 or 9-4x SUV.

Development of the Phoenix platform will be completed and used as the basis of a new generation of electric vehicles.

NEVS is expected to launch a production version of the Saab 9-3 ePower, which was unveiled nearly two years ago. It was powered by a 184bhp electric motor and driven by a 35.5kWh lithium-Ion battery which was positioned under the floor. The car was claimed to hit 62mph in 8.4 seconds. Saab said the car’s battery would give full power even at -30Cdeg.

Kai Johan Jiang, one of the founders of NEVS and a fluent Swedish speaker, owns Hong-Kong based National Modern Energy Holdings Ltd, a major shareholder in State Power Group which runs 28 biomass power plants in China.

NEVS is also backed by the Japanese Sun Investment group, which specialises in backing green technologies. NEVS say it is in a strong position to move forward with the re-birth of Saab because it already has long-term funding and there is no need for government approval of its plans from Asia, a common hurdle for many automotive tie-ups between Europe and China.
