We're making really heavy weather of choosing a car to replace the family hack, a Volvo S60 Bi Fuel. Its not as if the car needs to be an enthusiasts machine but still nothing is "grabbing" me.

I need a similar level of fuel cost ( equivalent to 45 mpg average on diesel through the full year) and it has to be an auto for my wife. We have grown to like some of the features of the Volvo - electric leather memory seats in particular - but these arent deal breakers. That said, all the mass market cars like Ford and Vauxhall leave me completely cold. Finally I would like it to be a bit smaller than the Volvo since there are only two of us these days.

Any ideas? Anybody running a Pious for example? Or a 220 Merc, 3 series BM, maybe even an Audi though I always think that the VW or Skoda versions of the same car are better value.

Anybody gone Korean?

Just replaced our Volvo V50 with an Audi A1. At first I thought the smaller size might be a problem, and certainly, on low profile tyres the ride is nowhere near as nice, but at 65+ mpg for the eco diesel somethings just have to be lived with.

I like the small Volvo C30. BMW 2.0d is always going to be a nice car to drive and well built. Audi A1 is also a nice small package. The new Merc A-Class is a fine looking vehicle and if it has a good engine, would be worth a look. Lastly, the Lexus 200h seems to be a nice package.

we have recently taken possesion on a 2 year plan, Merc 250 CDI top spec coupe £255 3x 24.

I'd look at the Lexus CT200 high level of specification and depending on your driving style 50+ MPG easily achievable.

I only have Pious to satisfy customers, this had returned a constant 49.5 mpg over 35k miles despite my bet attempts at driving it as if it were the aero.

I had a CT200 out on demo for a day earlier in the month, far better than the Pious.

We have a couple of Volvos on the fleet relatively new but getting positive feedback

I'm strangely drawn to the Chevvy Volt, Vauxhall ampera, if only they weren't so expensive...

I've been studying What Car, but not even the usual suspects are tempting me at the moment. Most cars are white goods these days, but I need a bit more than that.
I've shelved the Roadster idea for now. Could still be seduced by a 4 seater or Plus 8 Trad, but the Elise SC is something I keep coming back to.

I must admit that hybrids are tempting, but my 'family hack' spends days on the drive, so I don't think it's a good plan to stand a hybrid idle.
