SWMBO Jnr is back and her radio in the Clio refuses to pick up certain local station's a bit of a buzz then off it goes into search mode . My wife's car radio picks them up no problem all the time . The Clio radio picks up everything when she is down in Manchester . I tried a new ariel and no change , I pulled the radio out of the dash and checked the wires they are all OK inc the ariel lead . Anyone got any idea's please .

You may want to try and replace the external screw-on antenna, I just Google'd it and they are as little as 3 pounds on eBay. Also, if this problem just started as of the last week or so it may be due to the solar-flares the sun recently produced, has made for some spectacular northern lights shows here as well as poor radio reception. The sun emits light waves of all frequencies, even as low as radio waves and as high as gamma rays. Our eyes only see the visible light, but it is all there. The sun also emits many charged particles. When sunspot activity increases, solar flares result. These are extra bursts of x-rays and electrically charged particles. When this extra activity reaches the earth, it interferes with all electromagnetic waves. It is most noticeable in the low frequency radio waves.

Its called an aerial over here , the first thing I tried no luck just the same buzz but thanks all the same . Just a puzzle why it picks up elsewhere and not here , yet it used to . Wonder if its got anything to do with them going digital . You may want to try and replace the external screw-on antenna, I just Google'd it and they are as little as 3 pounds on eBay. Does it pick up elsewhere? Or is it picking up a different part of the frequency band elsewhere....say 88-91FM in X and 104-108FM in Y) in the two locations.... Or is it a DAB/ Radio....? That said not sure where this is going

Hehe, I know where you are going, but to give a definitive answer I need more info.
Cheers,

Graham, The radio is the one that came with the car, a 53reg Clio. It can pick up almost every FM frequency in Manchester but hardly any here ( It can pick up Radio 1 there but not here ).

Has it always been so quiet? Or did it work OK before going to Manchester?
Cheers,

Worked OK before it went to Manchester now the volume has to be turned up to 20 to hear it , my wife's you can hear it at 10. Thought about dipping my hand in my pocket and buying her a new one , but that would be silly if its something small , only plus side is with these new knob's and whistle ones I can carry a memory stick and play my own kind of music . It's hell listening to daughter's CD's taste in music when she drive's , hence trying to get the radio to work . Has it always been so quiet? Or did it work OK before going to Manchester?

I don't know factory radios - but they're only a badged version of one from a radio manufacturer.
Does the radio have any form of DX / distant station setting? Not many car radios have, but it's worth asking - got a handbook for the Clio radio?. I know it's a pain, but as you've tried the aerial and checked the co-ax feed, it may be worth temporarily dropping out the original radio so you can connect in a spare (I always seem to have at least one floating around) to see how that works - doesn't need to be a modern all singing version, all you are doing is testing for signal level.
I assume that you haven't had to make any changes to other radios in your everyday car or in the house?
Cheers,
