Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 09/09/19 09:06 PM

A member of the French forum MTW made me this semi rigid roof for my three wheeler :

I receive it next week, and I begin the adaptation on my car....

I had already made a manufacturing attempt last year trying to bend the aluminum with all the cylindrical objects found in my garage :

Don’t forget to video the entry and exit into the cockpit with the top in place.

Nestor has what I would call a “rigid tonneau”. A “hard top” would be more the coupe add on like on the new Plus6. Not sure what a half hard top would be, nor the correct French (Demi-tonneau ferme?).

Presumably the only issue with ingress/egress is one’s shoulder?

Here is a first version on the MTW of the person who made me the piece.
He uses the fixings of the original flexible canvas.
The upper part is open V-shaped for easy access to the vehicle

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 30/09/19 10:36 AM

Nice job.

Have you considered using an edge trim to protect things from the sharp edges, something like this https://www.holden.co.uk/p/edge_trim_pvc_8m1
Not sure how flexible it is to go round the corners though - a little heat might persuade it.

Also, is that the armrest from your car now attached to the cover, or did you obtain a spare?

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 30/09/19 11:52 AM

Beautiful work👍 Do the louvres relieve pressure or are the cosmetic?

What holds it in place at speed?
Posted By: nestor59310

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 30/09/19 01:28 PM

Hi Nippymog,
I thought about sticking an EPDM rubber band under the barrel cover and not on the edge
For the armrest, I will move it according to the use, either on the car without barrel cover, or on the barrel cover ....

[Linked Image]

Lightspeed,
The louvres are not decorative, they allow that there is no air pressure that is created at this place, there is no speed limit with the barrel cover

I wonder if you could add something like the apron they use on kayaks, to keep your bottom half and the seat, totally dry. I found over last winter, when unusually, I had my M3W in the UK over the winter after its rebuild at Malvern, that even if you have good water-proof over-trousers on, if you are sitting in a puddle of water, you still get a wet backside.

Nestor, how is your Pool ball gear knob attached?

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 30/09/19 04:05 PM

The kayak type spray deck has been suggested before and could cover the entire cockpit.

However viewing the instruments would be an issue (even if the spray deck had a transparent section), and your arms/hands would be under the cover so adjusting goggles/hats/helmets and wiping screens and mirrors would be a challenge.

Still, it's an opportunity for someone to have a go....

The low cost alternative is to use the tonneau cover as a blanket which several people have said works well.

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 30/09/19 04:58 PM

Chris,

I was thinking of a kayak apron, sitting a bit lower down, running from below the dashboard at around waist level. The waterproofing of jackets seems better than trousers, although when I did London to Brighton in a 1904 30HP Panahard (sitting quite high with no windscreen) on the year (?2012), when it poured with rain non-stop all the way, even in a newly waxed heavyweight Barbour, I was soaked right through by the time I reached Marine Parade.

Interesting, but how are you going to get rid of the water that will be collected?
Posted By: nestor59310

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 30/09/19 07:09 PM

For my part, I do not drive when it rains.
And if I'm ever surprised by a downpour, I take out a golf umbrella 150cm in diameter and I wait for the stop that the rain stops ...

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 30/09/19 07:40 PM

This is what you need. You can attach a hot water bottle to the drain tube if you want more sophistication. Remember, no-one looks at instruments.
I would think Barbour or Siebe Gorman would knock one up for you.

I want royalties

I don't know what the later cars are like but there are plenty of holes in the floor of mine to run a couple of drain tubes to. However as I only use mine from April to the end of September (it went into its winter storage yesterday) in the south of France, it would not be mod for me. Like Nestor above, I really only drive mine in the sunshine.

Its is an F type 3 wheeler from 1930/40's, which as original would have had a wooden frame panelled in steel.

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 20/01/20 10:27 AM

You could use Tenax fasteners which work with the same pegs as the "lift the dot" fasteners but are released by pulling up the knob rather than tilting.

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 23/01/20 04:29 PM

Is it more intended to insert into the fabric? :

Re: Half Hard Top for My Three Wheeler - 23/01/20 05:22 PM

Yes it is originally intended to insert into fabric but you could bond it with high strength epoxy to your aluminium tonneau. This would be next to invisible and the advantage compared with the lift the dot, is that you can release from the pin on the main body, by just pulling straight up on the knob. Many years ago I used them on a blanking plate where the spare wheel would normally be, on a racing 4/4, where we needed access to be able to change the differential quickly to alter the gearing for different circuits.

How do you get a Lift Dot locking mechanism to work with a rigid material?

Lovely work and a rather interesting workshop! As Wilson has suggested I’d try Tenax fasteners.

I'm guessing... a large hole under the mohair, and mohair patch is attached to the metal on one side of the patch?
