A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 24/03/13 03:23 PM

Dear all,
of course for all of you lucky owner of an Aero, probably these pics will look and feel boring and obvious but in the two weeks between deciding to buy the car (without having seen it in real except sometimes in London while walking) and picking it up, I was not able to find these...
So I hope that they will help somebody sooner or later smile

The very tiny footwell (I guess that if you go for the manual transmission you'll have no space at all to put your left feet while not "playing" witht he clutch

On the right of the steering wheel, in a very comfy position there is the ODBII plug (useful if, like me, you use an Android phone with Torque) and the trimmer for the instrument lights

To me the luggage trunk look HUGE!

Here with the two bags with the removable roofs. I love the (uselss) leather spread around in the trunk as well.

The mechanism is very nice and seems well built.

Re: few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 24/03/13 03:23 PM

These are the two leather bags to store the roofs. They are soft, well done and closed with a velcro. The shoulder strap is not as useless as I thought when I saw them the first time.

One part of the roof (to have an idea of the side and the finishing)

This is the "glovebox". it's tiny but at least there is a lighter plug. I have noticed that it's opened in the far end. I do not know if it was done by purpose. I'll try to find a way to close it.

This is nice. The wife of the previous owner was not too high, so he ordered a pillow to allow her to have a better visibility and seat postion. That was a nice surprise since my wife she is not a model as well smile
The upper part is leather, sides and part below is chamois leather and it's shaped to the seat

Other interesting parts would be the exhausts, the sump and, in general, the underbody.
I will work on those as well.

What is the accelerator (throttle) pedal made of? It looks like painted wood- I would have thought it would be aluminium, like mine on the 4/4.

I am pretty sure my SS accelerator pedal was cast with a Morgan logo.

Looking at this and knowing the previous owner was a little short I'm guessing he had a wooden 'platform' built up?

wow at 5'9" and the seat right back on the Max i struggle to find length to the pedal, this SS must have had one short owner to have had the pedal packed upto that level.

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 25/03/13 03:40 PM

The weird thing is that I am 180cm, I have the seat almost full back and I have no issue with the "Berlusconi style" pedal.

You can clearly see the alloy pedal that the wood has been attached to on the latest photo smile

Yes, as soon as somebody could post the photo of the stock one I'll try to understand how to fix it.

Might explain the extra seat cushion in the car too. Sitting on that "il Cavaliere" might just be able to see over the steering wheel. hide

The dealer told me that the cushion solution was for the wife. But I agree that probably the two things goes together. Need to check if I could find Ruby or some bunga-bunga leftovers in the trunk.

1. it's another thing I'll learn and remind
2. somebody else will be able to tell us if that part has been maintained in the "stock" version

Thanks Jay, but not taken by me (I take snaps! blush ) but George Williams of PH fame. He took photos of several of my cars before he went to University to do Accountancy. He dropped out of Uni and is now a full-time car photographer, much used by Haymarket and Car magazine. camera

I doubt he will still charge 100 for a 5-hour session anymore either! This is the front view, but he used more lighting and imho it doesn't work quite as well. We had to do it early on a morning, as strictly speaking you aren't allowed take photos here with Windsor Castle in the background - national security or something:

Please don't ask me what camera he used as it was a Nikon SLR, other than that - no idea!

The interior was taken by Stuart Appleby, as he featured the Aero SS (mine and Boshers) for his photography dissertation/project for his photography degree.

Interesting to see the footrest (that it's missing on mine).
Looking forward to see the accelerator and to understand if in my car the just adjusted the accelerator pedal or if they worked on the brake one as well.

The foot rest is not standard and, if you look at the top of it, is a modified part (the one that was linked to in the earlier post). I believe the factory have simply cut the top of it off - hence the line ending at the edge.

The standard cars are set up the way your pedal box is. However, as you have noted, your car seems to have had the accelerator pedal modified.

Hi all,
I need your help again.
Could anybody take a picture of the side/rear of the brake pedal?
I have now removed the block on the accelerator but I have the feeling that some modification was done on the brake pedal as well (since the brake pedal is MUCH higher than the accelerator. Yes, I know that it's normal that they have different heights but this one is far too much)

Before I touch that I wanted to make sure to operate in the right way.
This is the as is:

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 22/08/13 05:56 AM

I know we have different designs of cars but I had a similar issue and it turned out to the be the rubber grommet on the engine bay side of the pedal rod...it had worn out. Replaced and all was good.
Posted By: Ale_72

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 22/08/13 06:09 AM

No, it's not only a rubber grommet. It's much more relevant.
And if you look at the first pic of Simon, it seems to me that he does not have this "extension".

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 22/08/13 06:51 AM

I can confirm that Ale_72's pedal isn't "normal" - having driven the "Other" SS on Saturday.

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 25/11/13 10:35 AM

Going back to the original post ......

Extra cushion ...... Being a bit of a short **** I found the seating height in a Series 3 a bit too low so having found the right height using a few towels rolled up I have asked Steve Simmonds to make me a "booster" cushion to raise me up a bit ... He says he can match the leather and produce me a suitable booster. In production at the moment ... If it is successful I'll post a few pictures. swmbo says she will feel happier if I can see over the wheel .... rofl

Glove box .... I too had problems on the S3 with the glove box being open at the end. Found the problem when I braked heavy one day and stuff appeared in the passenger foot well. Solved it by making a cardboard template to cover the hole from inside and then cut a hardboard piece which is now held in by the means of the usual gaffer tape. Pulled the bit of glove box carpet forward and taped the hardboard to the glove box bottom then put the carpet back on. Because the space narrows as it goes forward and upwards it is possible to wedge the hardboard in place. Seems to work fine.

Cheers ........... Pete

To make a long story short smile
Carpet end of the luggage trunk was wet and I decided to see if I should do something or not, so I checked behind the luggage carpet and I could appreciate the amazing attention to details rofl

An overview:

The "ground" wires, hanging free and unprotected, of the ABS unit:

The nice 10cm screw that was hanging over the fuel tank since the screw "head" (I do not know if it make sense in English) was held by one of the tank belts (but let's be fair, it remained over there for more than 3 years. Probably more than other screws in their proper place):

Sometimes I wonder how i can be still in love with this car love swear

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 19/03/14 05:36 PM

When we collected the Aero Coupe from the factory we asked Morgan if they could help us as SWMBO is a little vertically challenged.

The Tillet sports seats in the Coupe are a little lower (less padding and lower mounted) making it more difficult for her to see out and drive in safely.

We asked them if it was possible to form some type of booster seat/cushion. They actually custom made a base and back panel to match the finish of the car. Aluminium sheet wrapped in foam and finished in the same leather and stitching. Once they are pushed into the seat you could not tell they were there unless you look closely.

You won't get that out of MB !

Somehow embarassing but considering the leaks I have in the luggage trunk this was the only solution I found out.

Even this one will be fixed, of course. In a few years I will have an "all season" car smile

Now I was thinking to have an extension done to the stormcover to be attached with a velcro strap.
In that way I can have the max flexibility.

Ale check these guys out ... I had them make an extension to one of their Aero storm covers so that it covered the bonnet louvers as well as the roof. I found them very helpful and it didn't break the bank. www.morganhoods.com

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 13/07/14 06:34 PM

Hi Graham,
Thanks!
We already designed with John (morganhoods) the extension and he produced it and shipped it to me smile
Unfortunately (or luckily) I used it only once and I forgot to take a couple of pics.
I wanted to keep it modular since when it's sunny and I want to cover the car I'll use the main part, and when it's raining I'll add the extension.

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 17/06/15 04:09 PM

I had them custom made in a shop in Milan. But I did not follow the Morgan colors on the M3W (since they were not the "real" ones).
I preferred to use the following:
Federal standard 595 - Blue color code: 25050
Federal standard 595 - Red color code: 20109
Federal standard 595 - Yellow color code: 23538

That were the colors used by RAF from 1938 to 1946

For sure I can ask them if they are willing to make them and ship them if somebody want them (it's a small shop, so I do not know). It was around 40 GBP if I remember right...

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 30/07/15 04:37 PM

Thanks again to all.
From April 1st 2015 until today I drove the car for 10.000km (6200 miles), from 27.000km to 37.000km.
I go on thinking that the more you use the car, the less problems you'll face and this is what happened. After 3.000 miles I took it to Borghi (Milan dealer, well known by Peter as well), we checked it and the outcome was: "it's perfect, drive it and enjoy it".
Only issue I faced this week is that the (and now we remark my clear limits with English language) the brake pedal excursion is bigger than before. The car still brakes like hell, but it starts not at the beginning -when you press the brake- but at half of it. Still not an issue, after summer (I'll anyhow be travelling abroad by plane) we will check it in details and fix it.
And again, the answer to the usual question:"can you use an AeroSS as a daily car?" the answer is: "yes, yes and YES". Life's too short not to.

I've had great fun the last few weeks using it as my "daily" drive. I was pottering around this morning and it is still great fun watching people checking the car out when its parked at the DIY store or supermarket.

(Currently the daily drive as the B5s is parked up because it appears the dealer has fitted the wrong oil filter - which could lead to oil starvation, serious engine problems and a £35k warranty claim!!!)

Yes, the extra saving of the coupe (that came out later) was significant.
But at least in 30 sec with the SS you can remove the roof sections and put them into the trunk (still having spaces for 2 big duffle bags and some other stuff) and you do not have to dismantle (not fold) the entire fabric roof and the soft top frame.

Quite agree, use your car and enjoy it, sitting it in a garage worrying about resale value is not what it's about. If you do buy a car for investment then your probably not a true petrol head. As someone else said if you want to drive it do so, life's too short not.
Posted By: Neilda

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 23/12/15 07:48 AM

I'm not sure it's resale value that some owners worry about. They just don't particularly want some dirty old slapper in the garage.

Actually, put like that, I wouldn't mind some dirty old slapper in the garage over Christmas. Hahahahaha.

I've never worried about resale values - not once. I do wince at the money I've lost on some cars - but during ownership, the value hasn't been an issue. But I do like seeing a sparkling car in the garage and to deliberately drive it through the mud (I live up a track that turns to mud in the winter) for a 20 minute pleasure drive, seems a bit mad.

New Ferraris and some other exotics change quite dramatically in value once they're over 10,000 miles on the dials - so I can understand why some owners who intend getting in and out (flipping) an Enzo (for example) might keep an eye on the mileage.

Glickenhaus, who is a terribly nice man, is also fabulously wealthy.... makes a teenie difference too. smile

Should you ever make the decision to sell....and I doubt you ever will because there isn't anything that could replace it....let me know. The colour and the leather make your car, to me, more desirable than any other car I have ever seen.
I'd even move Traka on....(but don't tell my wife)

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 05/08/16 08:02 AM

I will! But mine is LHD, I am not sure you would enjoy it. On the other hand a Plus8 with manual gearbox probably would be one of the choices I'd consider.
Posted By: Peter J

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 05/08/16 08:34 AM

I'm used to "wrong" cars...we lived in Germany for 8 years and for the first 6 we had both LHR (Mercedes) and RHD (Alfa 33) cars.
When we came back I brought my Mercedes E 250 estate with me and kept it for 3 years.

Only real problems are car park and toll booth machines when driving solo and overtaking if the car is low powered - which a Morgan Aero is not!

Tarka is an Auto, with paddle shift. I am not sure I'd take manual over auto after driving a manual S2 Aero.

If I was replacing Traka I'd order much the same car, but finished as yours, with black Aeromax wheels.
Posted By: Ale_72

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 05/08/16 09:21 AM

I'd take the manual just for sake of "old school" even if I never had any regret, until now, of the Aero auto gearbox. The weight of this car forgives anything.

Assuming this to be mine (not meaning this in a defensive manner) what was your feel about the manual Peter. I know everyone dislikes the 1st gear-pause-2nd effect as well as the heavy floor based clutch but you learnt o drive around these quickly.

With the combo of Auto Coupe and Manual Series 2 I quite like the mixture. Once moving the manual S2 is really involving and fun hence our final decision not to be able to sell it and damn the savings.

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 06/08/16 09:29 AM

Alistair,

indeed..I've driven yours and one of the new S5 demmo cars with a manual shift.

I have to say that the new car - same box??- is an easier change and the clutch seemed more progressive than yours, but not a lot.

BUT compared with the new MX5 I took out it is slow, ponderous and clumsy. BMW can produce wonderful boxes, my son had a BMW 330CSi and that box, even after 100,000 miles, was a delight. But the installation in the Aeros isn't anything close and in that car, even the new S5, I'd have the paddle shift Auto.

I also have to say that the MX5 is a delightful little thing. Yes, it is as common as muck and cheap, but it distills everything good about the 1970s lightweight British sports car into a modern, easy to drive package. There is an ex demmo one in red 17 miles from me. £20K.
Posted By: Alistair

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 06/08/16 11:57 AM

I agree, your comments are fair, it is not a sweet shift. It does require a fair amount of push and grunt. I quite enjoy that aspect as it makes me really drive the car.

The ZF auto does match the Coupe very well. I do tend to stir the gears manually as I love the big lever.

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 13/04/17 09:28 PM

Okay the visit was not what I had hoped so you definitely have the best photos with Ferrari's. On arrival I was told to turn my phone off completely and was not allowed to take any photos at all. Bah humbug !

i visited Classiche which is where they rebuild customer cars and it was amazing. An early 125S was being rebuilt and it had apparently been run by Enzo himself. I walked through the assembly area. They now make 8000 cars but 40,000 engines as they do the 3L V6T for Maserati on a new line.

Interesting fact. If you order Ferrari Red, Grigio (Grey) or White it is painted in house. Every other colour (costs extra) is sent to an outside supplier to be done in a spray booth by hand. Then shipped back to the factory and put on the line to finish.

My contact is Ferrari staff but not be allowed anywhere near the F1 program. He described it as "rings of privacy" with F1 and the future design teams as the two cores. A number of F488 riding around with prototype GT3 fins and high drag wings etc.

The production lines are V8 and V12 cars on different floors. The extra QA on the V12 floor is noticeable. Seeing the engine machining area is a wonder. Then the dyno room with a twin turbo V12 going full belt feels more akin to a Jumbo taking off. Thats a BIG lump of angry live thing.

But no pics....mind you a lot of them were around the Aero as I came out!

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 14/04/17 03:27 AM

I am sure it was a very nice experience.
I never had the chance of going there and not even to Pagani (that is close enough to think at a "combo" visit).
I have read that you're already at Como lake.
How long will you be staying there?
This morning new shoes for Violet (wheels that will never be as beautiful as the ones you fit).

Another couple of shoots (the second one with a lot of color correction since it was too dark)

I have been very thankful for the small footprint of the Aero on the costal roads of Positano and Como. It even works to my advantage to be RHD as I am close to the kerb (if there ever is one) as the locals don't stop.

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 07/10/17 06:29 PM

Tarka is at 34k miles, so matches the distance run by your Super Sport and yes, the seats are showing wear at the edges of the bolsters.
Your upholsterer has done a cracking job, they look really good.
I especially like the way the seat belt buckles have been covered!!

On to the next 50k km!!
Posted By: Ale_72

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 07/10/17 06:50 PM

Yes, the upholsterer was able to "correct" the age signs without removing the original effect of the distressed leather. The work on the seat buckers has been done 30k km ago by Borghi. The biggest issue was to find the right leather. Luckily he has a few leather hides (?) from different years and we were lucky enough to find one matching the seats (the same leather has been used for the glovebox panel).

And yes, next 50k km will be a joy laugh

I'd not have bet a penny to find a use for those but then... the remote of the garage fit perfectly. After that it was easy to fill them up laugh2

Much easier than that.
A friend moved to work and live in UK but he was flying back to his parent's place for his bday.
I joined them and I discovered that they have a farm! Not a fancy posh farm, a real one! love

Then suddenly there was some wine involved...
Well he is the one who was supposed to get older.

I do not take full responsibility on this rtm . The agreement is that she need to choose what she wants and I pay within a certain budget.
It's like a football championship.
We made the second round and quarter-finals but the end year end closing started for her at work (and the workaholic will work in this period 24/7).
Se next WE I fear we will have semifinals, finals and winner (as of today we have still 4+1 bags in the match).

And then again you have plenty of Violet time thumbs Maybe we will see her parked in Montenapoleone street soon laugh2

When you take a higher angle (6') of the Aero S4> it always looks a little bug eyes. Nothing like the farked shark of the S1 S2 I also love but still a little buggy.

Yet lower down the shape looks really cool with the flat line across the front wing curve making it low and wide. It is a very photo sensitive car.

Car not used from beginning of August.
Forgot to put the CTEK.
Picked up the car last WE.
Battery (Bosch S5006) dead. No chance of bringing back to life neither with the CTEK nor with my Black&Decker charger that gave me these two errors:
F01 Internal Shorted Cell Battery - Cannot be charged. Have battery checked by certified auto service centre.
F03 Internal Open Cell - Have battery checked by certified auto service centre.

[Linked Image]

The battery was from June 2015.
I am now waiting for the new battery (Bosch S5004).
The difference between the two is that the latter is shorter (15mm) and slightly less powerful.

I call it the zombie.

They hear it first and think it is some noisy motorbike, then they see it, look again and then they go slack jaw and stare. Then they usually mouth one of two words, the cleaner one being "wow". I will never tire of my job of bringing a little joy to peoples day as part of a public service.

And that specific ons is tracked on a regular basis. That is one of the funniest things you can do in a mx5.

The red on the Mazda is a Candy, this is where a base metallic pink is applied, then over layed with a Tintered red Lacquer, it gives a more like 3d effect when looking into the paint Gloss.

Interesting: the result is really good, but Mazada, unlike the "Germans" do tend to offer some bright colours.
Talking about paint colour to the local Mercedes dealer sales person I know well, it seems that the most popular Mercedes "colour" is a mid tone silver grey. Boring!!

Now I just need a "old" vantage V12 convertible manual at a fair price and I am ready to sell the 987 spyder. When all this is done, I am happy for the next ten years from an automotive perspective.

It’s a color that it’s really changing a lot based on the angle. Same location, same time (but I slightly turned the front wheels) and here looks much brighter. Pic taken not even a minute later than the other one.

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 23/06/20 07:09 AM

Ciao,
quick curiosity. After 50k km I noticed that the blinker has an interesting behaviour.
When you use the stalk to make a turn, the blinker is making no noise for the first 4/5 "flashes" and then it starts doing the usual "click click".
Is it just getting broken or is it "normal"?
I like the concept but it looks weird to me that they put in place such a complex solution.
Posted By: Alistair

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 23/06/20 11:21 AM

Yes this is normal on mine and a couple of others I have been in.

It does not make the noise until a few moments. I understand it is intended to remind you in case you have left them on after a corner and are still "flashing" in a straight line.
Posted By: Ale_72

Re: A few less common pics of an Aero Supersports - 23/06/20 11:32 AM

Don't get me wrong. I like it laugh
I was just wondering how did they came to this "sophististicated" solution.
