Hood problems

Has anyone had problems attaching the rear of the hood to the clamping points? Mine will attach if the hood is not fitted to the windscreen, but will not (on either clamping point) is the hood is attached to the windscreen

What car? Is it an easi up hood with two male catches that go into two receiver holes? And what hood material?

I had similar issue but the dealership told me to put two palms of hand together and give a good push to each side separately starting from the driver's side.

I assume this is a new CX platform car as per the forum used.

I haven't looked at the new hood mechanism on the CX cars but assume the front is fixed with two catches, one either side (if not then can someone please tell me). Can you fix the hood to the front with each catch but just so they are together, not locked into their final position? If so then do this, then push down on the rear hood hoop to lock into the car body. Tighten the front catches and job done.

If the rear is still not locking down then the problem could be the rear mechanism. As said, I haven't looked at a CX car but am assuming the rear hood locking mechanism is the same as the later Trads. If the same then it could be a snapped cable.

The system is similar / I think the same as the last trads. There are two prongs that pass into the catch plate as you push it down.
The prongs are not straight the factory bends them and that position (angle & depth) is fixed by a nut. If they rotate they wont fit into the cuo of the catch. Rotated too far they wont release.

From what you say the prongs need winding back to release a longer length. I would take it to the dealer if under warranty. If you decide to losen the prongs yourself please ensure a full rotation given the bent prong

One thing worth checking if the mechanism is the same as the trads is.
Check that when you pull the lever both sides move the same and to an adequate extent. You can see the slider parts moving as you pull the lever by looking down the attachment hole.
Obviously I don’t know the CX but on the trad, adjustment is through the drivers side seat belt slot. The passenger side can be adjusted via the spare wheel access. Both sides are quite difficult. But once done do improve things.

Hi Derek,

I'm not sure what the CX hood material is but if vinyl then they can "contract" in the cold or lack of use.

If you need to adjust the male prongs look internally for light coming through the seal. When there isn’t any your pretty much done (although my car shows slight light near the pivots cos they are too high).

Hopefully your catches will be operating at the same time but, if one disengages firstly, the spring pressure will lift the hood on a tilt putting an unequal load on the other catch. Ad hoc opening through the wheel well may be needed.

I had to replace my catches so from experience hood/catch adjustment can be quite difficult and the info from JohnV6 and IcePack is correct (although my male catches (prongs) aren't bent), there is, however, a small amount of back and forth adjustment at the fixing positions of the hoop pivot.

Yes, I too would use a dealer if under warranty.

The male conical shaped prongs attached to hood have a slot in the pointed end. With a broad blade screwdriver unscrew each (anti-clockwise) half a turn at a time. If the catches work OK without hood attached to windscreen it won't need much adjustment. Spray grease into receiving sockets regularly and maybe a smear on the prongs as well. An occasional squirt of spray grease onto each catch mechanism underneath won't go amiss either.

With hood attached to screen it should be possible to engage catches by pushing down hard with both hands either side of each. You can usually hear them click into place if properly lubricated.

I've noticed that mohair hoods do tighten a little when drying so always ensure the hood is errected until thoroughly dried after washing car.

Hi Derek

I have a 2022 modelyear Plus Four and had exactly the same problem. The fastening system is exactly the same as the Trad models only the fittings have been upgraded somewhat, especially the release handle behind the drivers seat. The hood material itself is a lot thicker.

To solve the problem I adjusted the pins at the rear to the point where they fell out and it was still too tight. If you look at the catches that secure the hood to the windscreen you will find there is a lot of adjustment to be had here.
10 minutes playing around with these and Bob's your Uncle. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself then take it back to the dealers.

Hi all, thanks for the information. Yes it is a new (Sep 21) Plus Four with a mohair hood. It had been down for about two months. Following the problem, my dealership suggested trying to attached the hood to the rear without it attached to the windscreen. That worked. I was then able, with a little difficulty, to attach the hood to the windscreen. It was then suggested that I try attaching the hood first, but do not pull down the catches. That worked. It was also suggested that mohair hoods shrink a little if not up, so I am hoping all back to normal after a week of the hood up and stretching a bit.

On your last point Derek; when I had a new hood fitted by the factory, they advised me to keep the hood up, when not in use.

All hoods whether vinyl or mohair should always be kept in the fully locked position when not in use.

I don't doubt the wisdom of it, but this has to be one of the guidelines most often honoured in the breach than the observance.

Can I really see myself laboriously erecting the hood whenever I put the car back in the garage only to take it down again the next time I go out? It's just not going to happen. If it's wet when I get home I leave it up until its dry, but once it's down it stays there until it's needed again.

For the first few years my Roadster hood (mohair) was hardly ever up. It seems I got away with that.

Now I usually leave it up. But it's how I feel on the day!
